With Lukic in the door, plus Matusiwa and Taylor returning from surgery, don't think another CM is a priority any more.
Plus O'Neil seems to like Humphreys, who has done a decent job there in preseason - and can cover LB or play further forward at a pinch. |  |

I wonder if a 5th Centre back is also in plans, and obviously if Jaden leaves, maybe another right sided attacker, with Burns leaving and McAteer maybe not up to the level, possibly Right sided attacking midfielder (another slot for Johnson?).

Beyond a striker and, atguably, Enciso (or someone similar) to play behind, everything else is about improving our options, or cover. IMO, the minimum level is pretty much covered.
That's not to say we won't sign more players than that. Upgrades, competition and cover - even alternatives for different opposition challenges, or stages of games - are out there and we do have the budget to splash out a bit. We haven't dipped into the loan market yet, with its possibilities for gifted youngsters from the top clubs. | |

A LCB with a higher ceiling than Greaves and Kipre who are both prone to errors which will be punished in the Premier League.
Having said that O'Neil has talked highly of Greaves but I thought yesterday he was the weak link in what for much of the game was a back three. [Post edited 9 Aug 10:12]

Problem is, you can't predict where that may fall and there is a strictly limited number of players in the 25-man squad. Unless it's to be U21s, we can't fill up on cover for whatever roles we think are most important (they all are).
Moreover, if we make signing after signing just through fear of being caught out, that depletes resources (wage budget as well as transfers) and leaves us with players who never get a look-in or are always on the bench. They might not want to come to Ipswich for that, or be dissatisfied when here. Whereas someone already established - a McAteer, for example - would have a higher tolerance for limited opportunities, being the situation they already live. | |

I can't really believe a manager who often goes with 3 CBs would be happy with just 4 fit CBs in his squad.
Equally, if Greaves goes down, can we really rely on Kipre to play consistently for us?

Of course Taylor has what it takes to play PL football. His performances vs Bournemouth and Wolves showed that.

I still think we need another right midfielder, or at least somebody that can play there. An injury to Fatawu and we’re playing the season with Mcateer as our main option. Understand Egeli can play there, and Jack Clarke at a push, but if we’re really going for it - I’d like better competition for Fatawu.
Edit - Somebody that can play either wing would be ideal, especially once Jaden moves on. [Post edited 9 Aug 11:50]

I agree with nearly all of that. But I never really understand the logic of the last bit about left back, though it can be applied to any position. Why are we looking for a back up?! That's my question.
You attempt to get the best player in possible, if they are better then they go in the team if they are similar they both get some game time and if they happen to be up and coming or different attributes then, yes they start back up, but to aim for a back up is short sighted in our position with millions to spend and the pull of the best league in the world. IMO.
