I love the vision and aggressiveness but it’s not just throw money and see what sticks.

So many examples of it, pitch being done after a league 1 promotion - How many would have waited to see if we made the PL first, or how the first champ season went? Training ground plans done as soon as they arrived, investment off the pitch being second to none. I’m sure if the first PL promotion didn’t happen that fast half the upgrades inside PR would have been gradually completed in the Champ as well.

Not to mention the additions of the Viola family and Clara Vista but with a clear structure still in place.

Now the recruitment this off season underlines the ambition. This lot mean business!

The ten year plan must be tasty!

I said when GC first took the reigns here that thrur ambitions from day one were tar beyond what any of us were even contemplating, and that was to be regular contenders in the Champions League! Many who saw that post(s) by me would have no doubt considered Id got a screw loose , or worse. I still maintain that is the ultimate ambition, because thats where the financial payback will come, plus of course the non monetary reward of "success ".

I once had a poster in my wall when I was at Sheffield uni ( 26 yrs ago) which said simply,

"Success, is the not position in which you stand,
But the direction in which you look."

I reckon thst still holds true today, don't you?

It’s what you learn along the way as well. Recruitment being a key if not the main example.

The ambitious 3 to 5 year plan from now must be to be a Brighton type and fund accordingly. We’ll spend another fortune next summer if we stay up.

I’ve posted several times that this is all about where we will be in 2031/32. A billion pound club, established in the PL and vying for Europe. This is why relegation was never a problem last season - we were already way ahead of the plan, and they had the vision and plan in place to allow for the minor road bump.

The ambition has been clear to see from early on, if you pieced together all of the available information and comments. It’s precisely why we will expand the stadium soon, and why the risk is low - the owners know where are journey is taking the club, and the expected results.

Hold on tight, and enjoy the ride.

That seems to be the way continually invest but funded also from sales of players, Brighton are incredible at this and to think not long ago they didn't have a ground. No reason why we can't match them in years to come but I think this year is huge, it's gonna be incredibly tough but somehow we need to stay in this league.

On paper we've made some great signings but we really need a proven striker I feel to finish off the work that will be done by Fatuwa, Maeda and Enciso.

As many commented on other posts momentum may well be key, our start is tough but with new managers at Pool and City it could prove either a good or bad time to play them, hopefully the former.

Hope I’m wrong but I still think it’ll take us 3 attempts. This time we’ve massively improved the base of the squad and several of our signings would do a year in the championship I reckon allowing us to go up stronger than this time with key signings rather than an entire reset. All sounds so simple!

I'm not convinced - I don't see any of Diop, Lukic, Florentino, Enciso or Maeda really fancying the Championship.

I know Liverpool are very different in terms of size, but that club was bought for £300m and 14 years later is now valued at £4.5billion based on the rumoured Bezos consortium stake.

I wonder how much we have already repaid that initial investment from the L1 purchase?

Probably 10x?

I think it was £32m purchase and valuation at last new shareholders was £300-£400m.

The owners have been very open about our respect for and links into Brighton.

That model is absolutely what we are. We buy, develop, sell and reinvest.

Players will be on a 2 to 3 year stay, so we won't necessarily have those 'club legend' type moments anymore either.

People have pooh-poohed this before, but it's quite possible that our future could look like Aston Villa now. A club, after all, with which we used to contend First Division titles.

They may be in a large city, but, unlike us, are surrounded by reasonable-sized competitors for fans (Birmingham, West Brom, Wolves, Coventry), while our nearest being Norwich 45 miles to the north and London clubs further than that southward (to the west, nothing Prem or Champ so far as the eye can see).

Tho really, in this day and age, it's more about sound financial structures and avoiding mad owners. Allowing the club to build, season upon season, become established, attract the better players and push on to European prizes (both money and prestige).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The pension fund made 5x on the original investment when they had a partial exit/sale to Brightpath at a 250m valuation.

I doubt they want to be here more 10 years so would assume we will see them selling another chunk if we stay up this season - that will most likely be at something closer to a 400m valuation.

As ive said on here a few times, having made excellent returns for the fund already I doubt they will stick around much longer nor need the hassle of going through the various infra projects that are in the pipeline.

You can be a club that brings on players into the Prem and sells many for profit. You can be a club that challenges too. But you can't be a club at the very top and selling on. There is a ceiling, and Brighton, Brentford have mastered it.

I do hope there are still club regulars, even if its guys like Leif who run the course over years.

Correct and that's why we will also ultimately become part of a multi club setup, but our owners aren't going to be the principle owners.
Their target has always been to sell, which is why we've seen the ownership slowly change. Ultimately once the club is established in the PL then they will sell out fully to a group like Redbull or BlueCo.

I'm ok with that and the owners have been fantastic and moved us so far forward in such a short time, but like anything in corporate america it will be aimed purely at profit and selling.

You're spot on about the stadium.

I remember when they mentioned 40k+ capacity, the instant response was "we'll never fill it", which is so short sighted. These owners aren't interested in what our attendances were in the Marcus Evans era. They're thinking lightyears ahead of that.

I personally think they're being conservative by saying 40k, and that really is only phase one. Longer term, and years away from being announced, I'm sure they see Portman Road as being a 50k+ stadium.

The population of Suffolk is almost 800,000 and growing. North East Essex (where we derive a lot of fanbase from) has a population of 340,000. We're just over an hour from central London with good transport connections. The population of the actual town of Ipswich almost becomes irrelevant. We're like a state team in American terms.

The potential size of this football club is huge. We're not going to realise that by being Championship also-rans. However, if we were to become a Champions League club on a regular basis, there's no reason why we couldn't evolve to become one of the biggest clubs in England.

If they can keep us up this season I wouldn’t be surprised to see them sell another portion to other investors. The plan is to ultimately flip the club so why risk everything if you can realise a profit earlier than planned. Plenty of established PL teams have ended up dropping out for years (e.g Stoke who had a decent PL spell).

It’s always been what comes next that worries me - e.g some Saudi/Qatari despots.

That's my worry this time around the latter 3 no chance plus new keeper if he proves himself and new striker if we get a decent one.

I'm not sure, going forwards, that Saudi/Qatari despots will have the funds to invest in sport to the same extent as they have been. As the Gulf crisis and climate change accelerate the move away from oil (particularly in the Far East), their importance and leverage will decline.

Have to disagree there to be honest- oil and gas use hasn’t even peaked yet, let alone declined and the likes of Aramco are benefiting from higher margins* with the increased prices (they are also stepping in where Russian production is down. That aside, sport is part of their post-oil income streams as they look to diversify in the medium term, I’d suggest their interest will likely increase if anything.

Yep.

Mark Steed rather set the tone didn't he on twitter even if it was a bit crass...

As others have said in this thread, these lot meant business. I remember saying that I thought some of our support hadn't clocked just how ambitious they were.

It's worth remembering that they originally looked at Newcastle.

We mustn't get ahead of ourselves but I think establishing us as a top 6 side and In Europe is something they will have an eye on.

Which is bonkers. But then again we were at the very top of the English game and Europe throughout the 70s and early 80s. So why not us.

It was always a deal with the devil though but we had got to the point where we had to take it.

You could argue that we all are already a very small part of Blueco in a way. Obviously unofficially.

There is no way this deal for the 2 Strasbourg lads isn’t going to have a nice buying clause in the deal should Chelsea fancy either of them at some point.
