| Farage bails on Clacton - again on 11:16 - Aug 14 by positivity | if you can't see the difference in the purely selfish farge whose corruption is laid bare and chooses to waste public money on a novelty contest to deflect attention, then i think you're too deeply into the cult to see logic and to then demand to waste millions more public money on a general election, that pretty much nobody wants, is incredible! |
Labour wasted money on the Makerfield election, which then meant a further election for Manchester Mayor. How much did that waste?? I'm not taking any sides, just saying that what's fair for one must then be fair for another. When I was outraged about Tory unelected PMs, so am I about this unelected Labour PM. Seems to me there are some extremely one eyed people on here. You can't have it both ways.

so what you're saying is a) you don't want a by-election in order to bring in a popular pm for the good of the country, because it's a waste of money b) you do want an unnecessary and uncalled-for general election (cf.650 by-elections), because it's a good use of money? you can't have it both ways!

it's exactly what you said. can you honestly not see the difference in outcome between makerfield (change of prime minister) and clacton (one person's vanity project in a vain attempt to distract from his corruption)? how can you be against a single by-election, but pro 650 simultaneous by-elections which would bring massive negative consequences for the country?

Labour didn’t waste the money. The spend led to a new PM. You can argue that it shouldn’t have happened, but it wasn’t a waste. They got something for the money. The UK as a whole got something for it too - we got rid of the hapless Starmer. Clacton meanwhile have the same MP they had before he stropped off because he didn’t like his rule breaking being investigated. And now it’s highly likely they’ll need yet another election if/when Farage is booted out. From an independent perspective, the two situations are quite different.

As I have said before, Benters, even though we are politically the opposite of each other, you take a lot of jokes at your expense, and sometimes more nasty direct attacks, with a lot more grace than most of us can muster. And then often respond with some good one-liners yourself. I'm a bit worried you were up so early, though. I hope you are getting the rest you need.

I agree with you. What is fair for one should be fair for another. The problem is this kind of messing about has gone on for years. In my lifetime it started with the utterly useless Callaghan (Sunny Jim? Nasty piece of work according to a friend of mine who had dealings with him). Then we had Major coming in for Thatcher when she was kicked out. Blair/Brown. Then the farce of the Tories.- the staggeringly stupid, unelected Truss and Sunak. Who elected them? Now this farce with Starmer. And the sitting MP for Clacton @rsing about. The basics as I understand them are that you elect your local MP. That person belongs to a party and if they’re the majority, a leader is invited to form a government. In theory, a party could select a new PM every month. However, the reality is that in a GE people usually vote for a party rather than local MP so it seems to me the constitution and rules are in need of reform. Especially as I don’t believe FPTP is democratic. Today politics is governed by deceit, lies, charisma, favours but not competence. Had competence been important or wanted, nobody would have wheeled in Truss who was known as an idiot and proved it many times. Today, we have slippery Labour trying to boost their popularity with Burnham. Squeezed into a constituency because of popularity. You cannot tell me amongst 100s of sitting MPs there wasn’t one that could do the job. This week we had Farage doing Farage things. The cost? Well, both events cost the taxpayer (hard working) money, but who cares. There’s loads of that. It all feels wrong to me and has done so for decades. We’ve had rotten government. Ideas: proportional representation. My vote is wasted here. A dogturd with a blue rosette gets in here. If you change leader for any reason you call an election. Tighter rules on expenses and anyone caught on the fiddle sacked and jailed. An end to tv in the HoC. It leads to electing shiny leaders with charisma but are crp. No solution really, just a desire for something better than what we’ve had. Just thoughts.

What’s normal? Me, because I’m never wrong. As Mel Brooks once sang in History of the World Part 1: Now get down people and listen to me Gonna tell you how I made history You can call me Louis, I'm the king of France Check out my story while you do your dance Now in seventeen hundred and eighty-nine The peasants were starving, but I was fine We were hanging out, down in old Versailles That's the weekend pad of my Queen and I In the alleys of Paris, they was eating rats But it was filet mignon for the aristocrats There were Dukes and Counts and Barons and Earls I gave them the titles but I kept the girls Blondes, redheads, wild brunettes Ladies-in-waitin', I didn't wait to get There was truffles for breakfast, toast for brunch The line of the Folies Bergère for lunch (Ooh yes, it's good to be the King) (Ooh La La) (Gee, but it's good to be the King) Say it girls (You can be sure about one thing) (Ooh La La) (Mais oui, it's good to be the king) It's good to be the king

The waste of money thing isn't really the worry in the grand scheme of things. I agree, I was just delighted to get rid of Starmer. Having no talent among the 400 or so MPs (elected on a measly 33% of the vote) that could be put in charge is more damning. I know you are reasonable Swansea, so if 33% led to a very different outcome in the Commons then the left would make the same complaints. I wonder where the Farage investigation goes now. It will split people again. If he is cleared of wrongdoing there would be howls, if he isn't there will be howls. It's sometimes best to litigate against politicians who are in office or who have left as little as possible. I know people will hate that idea but it's one of those unwritten rules of democracy I suppose
