Constable… Christchurch mansion 16:05 - Aug 16 with 1485 viewsBelsteadCav

If you get a chance pop into the Christchurch mansion, they’ve got a Constable exhibition on until October.
They have the famous Hay wain painting. I didn’t know it was 6ft long. The detail is incredible.
Apparently if it went up for auction it would start around the 160 million mark. As it’s 6ft I wouldn’t bid as it would be too big for my living room

Big year for Constable. There’s a play and a film about him due for release next month

Seeing his paintings in the flesh , probably goes without saying, is totally different and a wonderful thing. I've seen the Haywain in the National Gallery and it absolutely blew me away.

I fully intend to go see the painting at Christchurch Mansion.

The size of it blew my tiny little mind. It’s an incredible piece of art
They’ve got about 20 of his pictures on show, it’s well worth the visit

Ooh thanks for posting that. I must go and see it.

Constable is maligned because of the chocolate box images etc, but he was as innovative as anyone.

He was a chief rival to JMW Turner and they’d literally be completing their paintings at the RA right up to the opening.

He studied skies and was the first of his time to use green the way he does. His paintings are astonishing and anyone with a passing interest, just go and look at one or two. You will be amazed.

Like all great artists, if you are interested in history but can’t be bothered to read, just go and look at artists work. Whether Michelangelo, Ingres, Gainsborough, Turner, Constable, Pre-Raphaelites, you name it, their work will tell you all about their world.

I have seen the Hay Wain many times, and it doesn't do a lot for me. I get it as a cultural thing, but as an artwork I find it very meh.

However, I am going to see the exhibition on Saturday and I am looking forward to seeing the wider presentation, in particular reminding myself of the two painting of his parents' gardens in East Bergholt

They are wonderful small pieces I used to enjoy going to see in Christchurch Mansion as a child. In later years they took on a stronger meaning for me. Constable painted them from his childhood home after his mother had died and when his father was seriously ill.

I referenced them in a diptych I made from my own childhood home after my mum died and after my dad had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and also mentioned them in my thesis around the same time.

I think they are a remarkable pair of paintings, and I think Constable is better when in details like this (and his cloud studies) than on the large canvases with somewhat more twee subjects.

He's also the subject of an Exhibition at the British Museum currently if anybody finds themselves in the big smoke.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Dedham.

My Father moved from a small mining community in South Wales to find work over this way when he was 16.Around 1950.

He must have thought he’d moved to heaven,Dedham was so beautiful back in the day.

Constable is my favourite artist those paintings are fantastically beautiful.

The Haywain is magnificent but, being picky, I preferred Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, which the mansion also had on loan a few years back. Absolutely spectacular.

Certainly is. Much as I’d like to mock and pity the heathen in you, my grandmother’s maiden name was Bevan. Here ancestors rocked over from north wales to Suffolk and my DNA suggests a small percentage hails from that beautiful part of Britain.

Back to the point, Constable was not a conventional painter, which is surprising given how his works are seen today. Nor was his stuff particularly fashionable at the time and commercially he was not overly successful. He did earn enough for a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. He was not elected as a member of the RA until late in life.

Constable’s studies of light and skies are remarkable and I’ve always found his sketches and work-up paintings just as interesting if not more so than his completed works.

It’s the lefty attack squad looking for bites that’s all.

Wales is a beautiful country buh.

There used to be a bloke drank in the pubs around Dedham,he was a brilliant artist,he could also copy you a Constable for the price of a few pints of ale.I mean quickly as well.

He was well known in the village.
