Why are we loaning him out? I don't really get it if I am honest. He's looked really good in pre season whilst Scherpen has looked a touch shaky. He would provide genuine competition that for me Walton doesn't. The fact he is off to a mid-tier La Liga side to be their number 1 says a lot. I hope it isn't one we regret.

Say he stays .... Which of those three is going to stick around and be third choice?

I guess it's a case of thinking he will develop more with more gametime, eventually into a better keeper than Scherpen. But I agree it's a bit odd.

Are 24 hour recall clauses such a thing? I don't know if they work any more with squad registration rules? Walton is capable but I'm not sure I'd want him to be the only senior option if Scherpen goes down with an injury in mid-September.

He's had one season in the Eredivisie and two as a first-choice, so I think being thrown into the Premier League as the number one is seen as too big a step, he might have the sort of start Muric did and it have an impact on his career. Obviously there are also one or two high profile games in La Liga as well! The plan initially was the Championship.

A couple of people who know more about Dutch football than me - which is almost anyone, to be honest - have said he's viewed there as a better long-term prospect than Scherpen.

I'd be shifting Palmer and Walton personally. And having an U21 as third choice. Presumably we think Van Oevelen is a better keeper than Walton/Palmer - he certainly looks it from what I have seen and neither of those two will be getting a move to Valencia so that tells the same story as well.

But why would you want a 23YO to sit on the bench?

Unless you can say categorically he is much better than Walton that would be completely pointless.

I know a couple of people that watch a fair bit of Dutch football too and they've said they think he's already better than Scherpen. Might be an exaggeration but he's obviously good. He's got a similar profile to Roefs at Sunderland, who had less than 40 games under his belt in Holland. They trusted him as No.1 and it went well.

If he's not a better keeper than Walton then we shouldn't have signed him. He quite clearly is. He is lightyears ahead with his feet for a start, you can see that within 5 minutes.

Not much point in having him sit on the bench here, get him out to get some experience and then bring him back. Same we're doing with Slicker.

So, if Scherpen starts the season badly or gets injured we are sticking Christian Walton in goal in the PL are we? Surely you want your two best keepers available in your squad.

And what if Scherpen is great? The promising young goalkeeper plays 2 games of cup football in 4 months?

You are only looking at this through a negative lens.

That doesn't make any sense. Walton is a better keeper currently, but also aging- KVO is a good keeper already with a great ceiling. It's a market move for town and already looks quite astute.

I think it's good for him to get another full season as #1 under his belt in a top league, and we can reassess next summer depending on which league we're in.

Walton is more than capable as a backup to Scherpen - reminder he usurped Palmer who was our first choice for the second half of the prem season. I'm happy to go into the season with those two, and nominally an u21 as third choice. If we're down two keepers we're requesting an emergency loan anyway.

Good move. Get him a full season of football under his belt and see what we have on our hands. He looks like he could be really good so he needs to play.

I don't mind it. Scherpen has been signed as no1 so his game time will be limited. Better to get a full season at Valencia and come back a better player.

I can see us keeping Walton and Palmer as back up to Scherpen.

Which is fine, but we'd still be taking a massive chance. Only needs one or two apparent mistakes and, as we saw with Muric, the defence lose a bit of confidence and the fans turn on them.

I, too, think van Oevelen looks very good, but maybe better to give him time to continue his development out of the English spotlight.

There will be a lot of this now with our 'player trading'.

This guy could well never play for us, get loaned out for 2 or 3 seasons then sold at a decent profit.

It is how Brighton have become a sustainable business, ironically our 10 m goalie was contracted to them and never played for them, went on loan for 5 seasons then we bought him for a decent fee.

The bottom line is he is contracted to ITFC so we hold all the power in the deal long term.
2
Van Oevelen on 10:15 - Aug 19 with 1842 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

He is a 23 year old on a 5 year deal. Reading between the lines, this was most likely the long term project that was sold to him and the terms that his party agreed was the best choice for his career.

It's brilliant for his development and for us that he gets out and plays more games. Experience and maturity in a GK is something that can only be developed through playing minutes week in week out.

Walton or Palmer will become the number 2 this season (the other moving on). Scherpen is our number 1.

No - I am looking at it through a risk management lens. You surely want your two best keepers in the building in case you need the 2nd choice keeper for whatever reason.
1
Van Oevelen on 10:17 - Aug 19 with 1812 viewsdirtyboy

Scherpen is huge and we're likely to have a number of corners, set pieces to deal with and I suspect that's a strength of his, so more important than being able to play with his feet which may be more relevant if we can stay up this season and build a team than can play out a bit better from the back.

I do wonder if they've seen him in training and are thinking 'hold on' just a bit longer.

Van Oevelen on 10:20 - Aug 19 with 1786 viewsNutkins_Return

The model is proven.

We either end up with a quality game ready keeper or you only have to look at what Brighton do with keepers. They have just got the best part of £25 mil for Rushworth. They probably made about £ 6 mil on Scherpen. The prem keeper loan model works.

I would like to see a Jan recall option in there though.

If Walton is a better keeper currently then why do a mid-tier La Liga side want Van Oevelen as their number 1? Walton is an average Championship goalkeeper who will be a problem for us if required to play for a prolonged period of time in the PL. Palmer is exactly the same. After a great debut against Villa he was tosh as well - he had a spell of half a dozen games where almost every shot beat him.

The point is there is no value in Walton fiscally, so we develop the value in the younger player to either keep or sell on.

I think as a fan base we need to get up to speed with the fact these players will go on loan for sustained periods of time with some never playing for the club.

Brighton obviously operate that model. But they are an established PL club that have earned the right to do so and aren't in danger of getting relegated.

Every fine margin is going to count for us this season and we just need to stay up. We will have a massive fiscal problem if we don't. Hopefully Scherpen is brilliant and stays injury free then all will be fine. But we do run the risk of having egg on our faces. A lot seem to rate Walton more highly than I do because I think a sustained period with him in goal would be disastrous.

If he's going to get game time for Valencia, then I can see the attraction. Better experience than Slicker going to lower league clubs. Valencia do have a couple of Dutchmen on their books which is a good thing.

However, Valencia finished 9th in La Liga. Is he really going to start?

If so, fantastic. Although you could ask why he's not good enough to start for us.

If not, we're shipping him off to boarding school, when he could be at Ipswich with his compatriot keeper learning from him, and learning how our team plays.

I think if you plan to spend 200 - 300 m on players in this window and January then with our business model you have to turn it up a notch to align with everything else and to an entry level Brighton style trading strategy.

The elephant in the room right now is relegation is not an option!
