should woolfenden posts be in the general section?! seriously though, he needs a move to a nice stable mid-table championship team, which aren't at risk of promotion to find a proper home. should have followed his erstwhile cb partner's lead

| Another manager he’s fallen out with…. on 09:04 - Aug 22 with 870 views | OldFart71 | If true then it's the level a player reaches and how he see's himself against what a manager see's a player. We let Woolfy go as we did with Chappers, Hirsty,Morsy etc as we didn't feel they were good enough for the aims of the club. That's not to say we aren't eternally grateful to all of them. They are our hero's of the past just as Warky, Mariner, Beattie or Mills and Burley were along with many who have graced Portman Road. Aren't we extremely lucky to have a club of this stature just up the road. | | | |

Not from him no someone else at club,if it was McKenna do you think he would have taken Part in the thank you video when McKenna left? All about increasing players values you can’t increase A players value when they are not playing

So you're suggesting that Ashton was keen for McKenna to play those players with a higher 'value ceiling', rather than those who'd reached their peak? It's an interesting thought - I saw it mentioned on here back in January, when we were sniffing around that Millwall winger, that Ashton liked stockpiling wingers because their key stats (upon which values tend to be based) were easier to pad out than those of players in other positions.

Not saying it was the case with us and Woolfenden but people do seem to struggle with the idea that clubs outside of the premier league have to balance the on the pitch and off it, and sometimes those things can be linked. A friend of mine who I used to play football with was managing in L2 recently, he was saying the reason a lot of clubs down the leagues play ‘Pep ball’ and insist on playing out from the back etc is less about a style that necessarily gives them the best chance of success, but more that their players will be more attractive to clubs up the chain to buy if they’re conditioned in such a system and more likely to adapt to playing much higher. No idea the extent to which such things fed into McKenna’s selection but Egeli is an interesting one. Clearly spent a lot on him and gave him his chance, but when push came to shove in the final month or so he was nowhere to be seen. Was that McKenna / Ashton parking the project in favour of the here and now on the pitch given the rewards of promotion? Who knows but there is often a balancing act.

Selling players is the other side of player trading of course, although much less disruptive if you can sell your fringe players rather than regular starters, particularly if they're homegrown and therefore pure profit. Holding onto your more important players becomes that much easier if you have wealthy owners who are prepared to plug the gap and continue to invest in the team (within the financial rules).
