And ‘well you buy the club then’ and ‘well who exactly is going to buy the club’ were actual responses given to justify him slowly killing our football club. Look at us now. Fast forward 5 years and we’ve gone up two leagues and are now about to have signed Enciso, Palacios and Abraham in the same transfer window. Absolutely superb. Gamechanger (and Ashton despite his nonsense off the pitch) deserve a lot of credit. Europe 2028 has set sail. Next stop - Old Trafford.

| Anyone remember when the idea of #EvansOut was slated on here on 11:41 - Aug 27 by J2BLUE | I remember some proper arguments with people when the takeover was announced. Found it utterly baffling that people were opposed to it because it might go wrong. I remember saying we're on the Titanic and slowly sinking but you don't want to get on a lifeboat in case it sinks. Batsh1t times. Nothing is ever without risk but sometimes there is very little to lose. |
I’m a chips in kind of guy as it is. However, the idea after the best part of two decades of Evans people were worried about because it might go wrong was laughable. I’m just surprised Americans didn’t get on this idea sooner really. The EFL is a cheap way into professional sports with a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So a depressed asset like ITFC was always an incredible opportunity. People would probably be amazed how much it costs to say, start an MLS team. [Post edited 27 Aug 13:27]

The reason being, he hadn't saddled the club with external debt and we still existed and I was grateful for that. It just felt the game moved on way too fast. He'd had a go at spending and it failed, don't want to burn yourself again. I hated the "put his hand in his pocket" brigade, it was like seeing how spoiled children behave, just totally ungrateful. He was always open to selling and said he wouldn't unless it was the right person...well, he at least got that right. Ultimately, he spent £100m or so of his own money and received nothing from it other than a failed project, at least he tried.

But equally, we could also be in a worse state in another 5 years time too. It can change very quickly. Gamechanger etc are here, ultimately, to make a profit. They can easily sell up or disappear and put us in a bad position. Enjoy the current day, but remember the past and be cautious for the future.

Did he try though? The infrastructure of the club was probably at league 2 level, we were so left behind, staff, infrastructure wise it was a bit embarrassing.

I recall only a minority saying he should stay and not sell in his last 3 years. [Post edited 27 Aug 15:15]

Evans initially funded Town well, but his problem was that he was hopeless at picking managers. He rightly left Jim in situ & gave him some money, but as that didn't seem to make the team better, Evans went for Keane, who was a disaster in terms of wasting money on average players (although apparently Corporal Clegg had a bit to do with that) & wasn't a success as a man manager. Hence the well was poisoned as far as funding transfers was concerned & Evans came up with Jewell, mick, Hurst & Cook, only 1 of whom was any good.

Evans, for all of his many, many faults still deserves tremendous credit for the way he managed the transition from his ownership to this current one. For every good EFL takeover there at least five bad ones and we could have faced any number of worse fates. |
Very true, not many want to dwell on much of what happened during his tenure. But he said on a few occasions he would only sell the club when the right person/people came along. I think we can all say, he was most certainly true to his word there! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Indeed. I would argue that it is because Evans didn't just bail out to the first offer that came along we are where we are. The were as bad, if not worse, options. Much as the Evans era was a disaster, we can be very thankful for who he did sell up to.

More that just picking bad managers. He run the club into the ground l, the state of things at the ground, training staff levels were 3rd rate.
