Makes you sick that he does not see out his term and causes another £200k+ bi election. Total scum. Clearly did not care for the union. Takes the money and runs.

We had the nonsense about glasses within weeks of starting the job.

Then "two tier kier".

PM in July 24. By August we had the Express saying he had sounded the death knell for "our pubs". Two tier kier was started the same month. There were telegraph headlines in July itself claiming he was unfit to be pm.

You cant rewrite history, no matter how much animus you hold towards the bloke.

A rather unpleasant post given you're the one ranting like a bit of a loon in this thread.

I'd agree that the media turned on him almost as soon as he formed a government, but prior to the election he had a relatively easy ride. Almost like they were setting him up to fail.

OP is a bit OTT but I am irked by people not serving their term, especially when they harp on about wonderful constituents.

A couple of broader points. I think I’ll eventually end up liking Starmer compared to Burnham. He was uninspiring and politically a bit headless, but Burnham is likely to take us far further down the road of higher taxes and uncontrolled spending. It’s very difficult to put a finger on what his politics is, but I’m sure the budget will see to it that his popularity has already peaked.

I don’t really buy the media having it in for a PM line. It’s always gone on. By media, I assume it’s the press specifically. How many voters are still influenced by papers, who didn’t already have their minds made up?

Starmer quitting as an MP now he has his PM pension on 07:22 - Sep 2 with 593 viewsDJR

As someone who resigned from the Labour Party because of what went on, the Starmer project is my specialist subject.

I think his resigning is par for the course, and in my view is evidence of his ruthless ambition, in the sense that he appeared to want to be PM almost for its own sake, and now that he is not, he moves on to something else.

The more honorable thing to do would at least to have stayed as an MP for a year or so, and maybe then accepted a prestigious foreign affairs role.

I also feel that announcing his departure on the same day as Burnham's first speech in Parliament as a Minister of the Crown for 16 years was rather vindictive.

He was also given an exceptionally easy ride before the election.

Also worth reposting the following that I posted a while ago.

"Starmer was very ruthless, and was far more deceitful than I would have expected of a fellow lawyer but maybe that's politics for you.

A few examples

1. Margaret Hodge said it had been suggested to her that Starmer was lying with his 10 pledges in order to win the leadership election.

2. Starmer said the following in 2020 but proceeded to control selections absolutely and impose right wing candidates.

"The selections for Labour candidates needs to be more democratic, and we should end NEC impositions of candidates. Local party members should select their candidates
for every election."

3. Starmer was just as slippery at PMQs as Johnson and very rarely answered the question.

4. His sacking of Olly Robins was a disgrace and made a mockery of his statement of support for the Civil Service yesterday.

5. He claimed that the two-child benefit cap removal was his finest achievement buthe was forced into doing this."

You’re right that we need a very different government, but I’m not sure Reform are the answer, other than a shock to the established parties.

The cost of borrowing is astronomically high, way higher than the Liz Truss days. Governments hands are completely tied with what they can spend and more taxes just adds to the doom loop. We can’t be more than a couple of years from a major, painful correction

Hands up I voted for Starmer on his perceived ‘decency’ after years of Tory corruption and ineptitude.

However, his legacy is the most authoritarian/Stalinist PM in my lifetime (including the aforementioned awful Tories). ‘Digital papers please..’, removal of some trails by jury, designating protest groups as terrorists, attempting to cancel local elections- could easily be describing policies of the Ayatollah, or Putin. What frightens me the most was the lack of pushback, too much concern around Reform whilst fascism was already here and removing our rights in plain sight.

Nothing in the manifesto suggested 1984 was Starmer’s policy guide. Hopefully Burnham can bring some reasonableness back to our politics.

I had a realisation, sometime in 2022/23 that the Conservative Party was in no way Conservative and that they didn't represent my political thoughts at all. Since then I have supported no party and didn't vote in 2024. I imagine that many of the remaining 25% odd of Labour voters will have the same with Burnham.

at a rate of borrowing of 5.5%, the debt is not sustainable. There will be very deep and unpopular cuts. The populist left claim billionaires can be taxed to plug the gap, but look at the maths on this one and you see it isn't going to work. There was talk of a wealth tax raising around £25bn. That's less than 1% of the total debt, notwithstanding the risk to capital flight and the further damage such a tax would do to 'growth'.

It's a good job we returned to 'grown up politics'. That's why he quit parliament on the 1st day Burnham was back in order to usurp him. What a petty man, sums him up perfectly.

He couldn't be further from what I consider to be a decent, centre-left Labour politician.

I think this is an example of his ruthless pursuit of power overriding the principles that one would expect of a human rights lawyer.

And interestingly, the Guardian yesterday had the following article.

https://www.theguardian.com/po

"Almost half of terrorism arrests in Great Britain since 9/11 have been in past year

Increase coincides with proscription of Palestine Action last year which has led to thousands of arrests for allegedly supporting the protest group"

I suppose I have skin in the game but there was no need for him to say only a few weeks ago that he intended to stay on as PM if that was not the case, or if he had any doubts.

Once again, it just seems to me to be further evidence of his deceitfulness.

Yes, they all say when they resign that they will continue to serve their loyal constituents from the back benches but unfortunately that's all PR. I can see why they don't want to continue; they're simply avoiding more awkward questions immediately after they resign.

This thread is about Starmer. Why do you keep referring me back to Farage? I can check, but I am sure you have done this on another thread.

If you don't think the timing was vindictive, then good for you. I do and it's not a unique view. There will now be a challenging by-election around the time of the autumn budget too.
