Fair point on bad weather numbers, that does suggest people do hope to make the full crossing, so maybe 'hoping to arrive safely' is fairer than 'planned pick-up'. In my opinion it does still present the question of, If the crossing is known to be dangerous (and illegal), does the guarantee of rescue reduce the perceived risk enough to encourage people to try it who otherwise wouldn't?
As for a National Trust-style takeover. I have no idea, your thoughts and knowledge will be far greater than mine on this. I've said nothing about changing who governs the RNLI though. |

To be clear, I'm not anti-RNLI, quite the opposite, volunteers risking their own safety deserves respect, it certianly gets mine. My point is whether a system that guarantees rescue as part of a foreseeable, repeated dangerous route creates the wrong incentive and puts more people in danger in the first place. That is all. |
That’s an irrelevant straw man when it comes to the RNLI. It’s not a discussion to be had as they rescue people indiscriminately. No different to mountain rescue who’d rescue anyone on the hills in distress be that a foreigner without a valid visa or a dickhead who’s decided to climb the mountains in flip flops in January.
The logical end point of your argument seems to be to want to disincentivise migrants by removing the option of RNLi rescue. The RNLI wouldn’t entertain the idea thankfully. I doubt potential RNLI rescue is high on the list of reasons why people make the crossing anyway. |  |

Are you involved in drug smuggling? (Yachts regularly cross the Channel, North Sea and Irish Sea carrying illegal drugs.)
Is your tanker/freight carrier part of the dark fleet serving Russian, Iranian or other sanctioned countries' interests?
Did the expectation of condition-free rescue encourage you to make this voyage in less than ideal conditions?
Any Norwich supporters on board?
Are you carrying any prohibited foodstuffs?
Have you consumed alcohol in the past 24 hours?
