| “Maguire handball was correct decision” 12:02 - Sep 9 with 2715 views | Chris_ITFC | Official verdict. Time to move on, but what a SHOCK. “Maguire's arms are within his bodyline meaning that the contact with his right arm was accidental and not a punishable handball offence given that Maguire was not the goal scorer. The shot was clearly off target and then deflected in via the defender for a clear own goal. The panel supported the referee's call to award the goal, 4:1, with one panellist considering the handball to be deliberate.” https://resources.premierleagu | |

| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 12:20 - Sep 9 with 2017 views | barcelonablue2 | I hope all other sports in the UK also change to accept the correct decision of our ever great-grand correct PGMOL and move on. Next time a cricket player moves his ball towards the ball but does not catch it, the correct announcement will be an accident occurred. Cricket needs to MOVE ON. Next time a basketball player move his hands towards the ball to block a dunk, the correct announcement will be an accident occurred. Basketball needs to MOVE ON. Next time a rugby player move his hands towards the ball to intercept a pass, the correct announcement will be an accident occurred. Rugby needs to MOVE ON. Farcical body. Sorry if the caps are a tad much am imagining a Morecambe and Wise shop scene. | | | |

| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 12:31 - Sep 9 with 1880 views | farkenhell | So, according to this interpretation of the rules, if Maguire had caught the ball instead of parrying it, then drop volleyed the ball against an opponent who was standing outside the line of the goal (whilst ensuring at all times that his hands and arms remained within his bodyline) and the ball rebounded into the goal, the handball would have been deemed to have been accidental and the goal would have stood. Which idiots make up these rules and have they ever played the game? | | | |

So under the old rules that we all grew up with, exactly the same decision would have been reached. I really don't think that we can feel that aggrieved. We need to do better in order to take points from teams like Man Utd. They stuck 5 past us, and we can't let them do that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What makes it sillier for me is that the new rule was introduced to stop the last attacking player benefitting from even accidental handball, but because his crap shot deflected off our man it's kosher. Common sense says his handling was too advantageous whether intended or not, albeit we were at a period in the game when their next goal felt inevitable anyway. Agree with your conclusion aha.
| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 12:53 - Sep 9 with 1630 views | Garv | The easiest way to look at it in my opinion is to ask yourself, if that had been a defender inside their own box, and there had been a penalty appeal and VAR review, would a penalty be given? Of course it would, and I think it would for either side, so this isn't an accusation of corruption. It's just a handball. That's why all the chat about the law and the shot being off target or not, is almost entirely irrelevant. The law, ironically, is a good one. The officials have just missed a blatant handball, and for some reason they've doubled down. | |

Yep. I look forward to seeing about five penalties of the type you describe being awarded by VAR this season.

And how we will all laugh and roll our eyes.
| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 13:15 - Sep 9 with 1424 views | surreyblue | The more I look at this, the more I think the problem sits with the accidental handball rule. The existence of an accidental handball rule is important as it prevents ridiculous decisions where the ball is blasted at a players hand from a yard away in a position next to their body and a penalty is awarded. I can also understand the "accidental handball directly scoring a goal" rule to a certain extent - if you are not going to penalise accidental handballs, there need to be an exception when one leads directly to a goal. There is a legitimate question as to whether that goes enough phased of play back. However, the accidental handball rule reads too broad for me, as it allows a situation where the player moves their hands towards the ball in a manner that could be deemed natural, as long as it is within their silhouette. It feels like "accidental" and "deliberate" don't cover all options - there is also an "instinctive" event where the movement of your hands may be natural and not making yourself any bigger, but it results in contact between hand and ball. For me that should be an offence, but the current rules seemingly don't. It wouldn't surprise me if that definition of accidental is tightened up at some point in the future. Sods law is that we will lose out because of that change shortly after it is made. (While I'm at it, I also think the offside rule that means the offside is nullified if a defender makes contact after taking a deliberate action is stupid. Often the contact is made because the player is in an offside position in the first place. We have a perfectly good assessment of a deliberate pass with the backpass rule - why not apply the same hurdle with the offside rule?) | | | |

I think the rules or rather the interpretation of the rules are made up as they go along to be honest. You seem to get several incidents a season where all neutral fans and ex-pros think a decision is wrong but the PGMOL say it is right.
| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 13:23 - Sep 9 with 1320 views | MattinLondon | If this was simply a case of referee incompetence or unconscious bias then I could live with it. Bigger clubs have always got away with it. But this decision has been endorsed by the PL which I think validates fans of smaller clubs who believe that bigger clubs are favoured. It’s not undermining referees by disagreeing with them it’s just a case of ‘you made a mistake’. Constructive criticism makes most people better at their jobs. If this was the other way round and we benefited and then scored - VAR would’ve intervened. But if it did not, that referee would be officiating the next few matches in the EFL rather than the PL. | | | |

No, because that would have been blatantly handling the ball, therefore deliberate and a free kick to Ipswich (plus probably a yellow card). The issue is that the handball was deemed in the moment - and subsequently confirmed by VAR and this panel - to be accidental. What caused the problem for us was the ball rebounding off Greaves' heel and into the goal. Had that not happened, the goal would not have stood, even if Maguire's shot were on target (which it wasn't). It's not this new rule, but the authorities' interpretation of deliberate handball which should be up for question.

| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 13:52 - Sep 9 with 1120 views | Len_Brennan | It's maddening. To suggest that the extreme movement of wrists and/or elbows, to actually result in parrying the ball into a more advantageous position (gaining control over an awkward bounce etc.), does not constitute deliberate handball, regardless of what happens afterwards, is just plainly disingenuous. | |

Add in that if the goal would have been disallowed, you can guarantee that the panel would have agreed that it should have been! They will back their own to the hilt.
| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 14:00 - Sep 9 with 1060 views | m14_blue | If we're no longer penalising players for accidental handballs then that's a good thing in my mind, and will mean virtually no penalties/free kicks for handball at all (except for the very small number of truly cynical offences on the line). The problem is, we all know that won't be the case. A ball into the box will catch someone's arm next week, a penalty will be given and the same people defending this decision will support that too. | | | |
| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 14:01 - Sep 9 with 1046 views | Deano69 | So which moment of hitting both hands and both forearms was accidental. Utter bobbins There was a definite forward motion movement that guided the ball to his feet. I am sure it wont be the only contentious given against us this season, so Meh | |

| “Maguire handball was correct decision” on 14:06 - Sep 9 with 1017 views | mellowblue | The way the first sentence is worded does not remotely tally with the FA rules. the statement basically states that because his arms are within the bodyline it has to be deemed accidental. Which is not the reality, as that does not even address whether it is was deliberate or not. With that statement it has been taken out of the equation. Very clumsy wording, because the first consideration is always was it deliberate or not. | | | |

I agree. I think the fact a goal / own goal was then scored almost confuses the whole thing. Forget the goal - it’s just a blatant handball.
