I've shared my (admittedly luddite) views on the pace and scale of AI development on here before, so it is interesting to see these views now being shared.
I suspect the genie is so far out of the bottle that it can't be slowed now though.

The companies are concerned they are unable to maintain their current growth but admitting it will send the markets spiralling, however having governments apply governance and controls to restrain growth will not scare the markets without the companies having to apply controls themselves.
Ah! Thanks, not sure I feel terribly reassured , but at least I see the logic now.
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Not sure I do as either way if that was true then the share price will drop.
Sometimes the straight answer is the truth. There are a significant number of people who have concerns and the can can’t be kicked much further down the road.

I was reassured the moment Big Don T commented that "The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!"

I use it daily for work, completely changed the way my team work and for the better in terms of the speed of output and quality.
I think the level they’ve reached is enough though. Anything considerably further and i would start to get seriously concerned about the number of jobs it would make redundant.
Just like the industrial revolution did, hundreds of thousands of jobs initially lost. Would you want to turn back the clock and cancel that? We have to find ways of working with revolutions not being frightened of the, by retraining people, or we could of course alternatively go back to living in caves and stay there.

Whats that reason?
Anything Trump says is a hoax...... Isnt.
Because making their models sound like something so revolutionary it's going to kill us all is good for business.
If it's THAT powerful, of course you want it to read your emails to you in the morning. Of course your business needs it. Of course institutional investors should throw yet more money into it.
That's not to say there aren't dangers, clearly there are, but I wouldn't listen specifically to the people developing these AIs telling you how scary they are.

Notice how these warnings about how it's going to kill us all and how scary it is consistently comes from the people who are selling you it?
There's a reason for that.
May I ask you what your confidence level is for your base assertion that, to paraphrase if I may, these warnings are about business strategy rather than a serious, imminent risk?
(for myself, I'm deliberately never 100% certain about anything, so I won't respect an answer above 99% )

A lot of it was talking up things before the proposed IPOs. No such thing as bad publicity when you're trying to drum up interest and investment.
With regards to the models themselves, for the general use case they are as good as most people need them to be already. Even the open weight models are fine for 90% of use cases. Is there a use case at this stage for continually improving models which is what any IPO needs to promote? If you slow down development you can string that out a lot longer.
If one is really concerned then air-gapping crucial systems prevents unintended intrusion into those systems.
However there is also great value in some applications, especially in research and diagnosis but then one could argue a well tuned expert system could do that work.
The speed of development of humanoid robots that could easily be adapted for military purposes seems more scary at the moment.

Pretty strong, because they've been doing this for literally years at this point.
I remember OpenAI saying GPT-2 was too powerful to be released to the public.

When we were discussing this last year I was referencing Geoffrey Hinton alot and he has resigned from Google to allow himself to have a voice of concern. And he says Google is one of the better AI companies.
The idea that this is some sort of business strategy is like some bad joke. It’s as plausible as climate change isn’t a thing. The odds are we wont be wiped out but to just dismiss it is foolish in the extreme imo.

Is a business decision for him? No, I don't believe so, nor for what Stokie put above.
Is it when the businesses making these AIs continuously come out and tell us all how they are going to end humanity? Absolutely.

Andrew Marr post above is interesting too.
Just because the tech bros are largely unrelatable and obnoxious doesn’t mean they are being duplicitous when talking about their concerns with the pace of Ai development or its dangers. I’d be more concerned if they didn’t. I think it’s more plausible they re covering their own backs for if something does go wrong and they say well Donald said it’s all ok.
I’m not sure why you are so sure it’s all so ok. Last year you wouldn’t see these things as much more than regurgitating data from the internet and incapable of original thought or taking actions that weren’t coded into it. Anyone can see they are much more than that and that we are entering a phase when it could run away from us. I’m concerned and I think we all should hold a healthy concern. I’m not sure there is an answer now though.
