Walton is an Average Championship level keeper. I honestly thought Hull, Bristol City, Millwall and others had better last year.
Whatever happens with Scherpen, Walton is not the answer in the PL. The club was right to act, let's hope we got it right. |  |

Yep, loads of keepers better in the champ last year than CW.
Funny because the last two playoffs winners Sunderland went up with Patterson and Hull with Pandur both of whom are better than Walton and they of course knew they needed to upgrade for the Premier League.
Nothing should surprise us though, there was a thread this summer asking if Harry Clarke would be in the plans this season lol
We have to really hope Scherpen is going to be ok, otherwise January it is again. [Post edited 16 Sep 3:45]

Only goal Walton can be criticised is the second. But even that intercepted pass wasn't as bad as we've seen from Scherpen lately. Was wide, and Nunez got enough on it that Guimarães' touch should have been his last. Fault for that goal lay more with Greaves and Ouattara, who were favourites to win the second ball, but missed their tackles.
Compare that with Scherpen at the weekend. Passed straight to Adam Wharton in a central position. No Town player got a touch, so Wharton had an open goal, and it was a poor finish.
Still Walton > Scherpen for me.
Striking that Arsenal's second keeper, Arrizabalaga, is a similar profile to Raya as first-choice. Good with his feet and only ~6ft, so short for a keeper. Arteta is clearly prioritising footwork, speed off his line, and sweeper capability. Very different from our top-two keepers. Tall, and footwork is much inferior. Maybe our attribute weighting is wrong for modern top-class football, and we need to go back to a Hladký type keeper, but with better shot-saving. Yeah - I said to a mate last night that we just need to be thankful the side we put out last night isn't the one we are trying to stay in the PL with. It had a very 24/25 feel to it with half a team that was clearly not up the level.
I've said on here multiple times I don't understand why we sent KVO out on loan after a very promising pre-season. It's mental to me that Walton is our backup option as a PL club. | | | |
