£55 million! FIFTY FIVE MILLION POUNDS!
Arsenal had so much talent on show yesterday with some seriously impressive young players. Say what you like about Dowman, but Lewis Skelly for me was very impressive. Everything he tried to do was productive and forwards. He definitely needs to be playing week in week out though.
Yet......How did Arsenal who have been relatively shrewd with their business over the years (Maybe Pepe aside) end up spending £55 million quid on Gyokeres? Everytime I have seen him play he looks distinctly average. Against what was a weakened backline last night, he didn't stand out at all. |  | | |  |

Arsenal fans have moaned for years that they need a decent striker. Trouble is, everyone knows who the best strikers are and they're usually not for sale. Plenty of expensive dud strikers around e.g. Jackson. Delap etc. |  |

Yes glad he was there rather than Havertz who would probably have filled his boots (and who cost about the same!) I think last year tbf to Gyokeres, he gave them a different option they'd been lacking up front and didn't do too badly in that respect but once Havertz was back and fully fit again, the difference in quality was pretty stark. |  | | |

There's a lot of talk about how strained the relationship between Arteta and Andrea Berta is. Arteta is seemingly very diligent, perhaps overly cautious in his approach to identifying players, focuses on data analysis and stats, and how he feels he can integrate them into the team. Berta works primarily with a core group of agents and works based on relationships rather than data, Gyokeres was a Berta player, not an Arteta, and it shows.
He doesn't fit the Arsenal blueprint, doesn't have the attributes to play the way Arteta wants, and it seems there's a bit of stubborness from both sides, Arteta won't adapt the Arsenal game to suit Gyokeres game a little more, and Gyokeres seems very reluctant to try and play the Arsenal way. He'll be off in the summer, he's going to be sitting around waiting for Kai Havertz to get injured this season.

There was an interesting article on Berta's summer dealings on the beeb recently. it basically suggested that Arse could have had Rogers for c£100m if they'd moved quicker, but hung around on the off-chance of Vini or Alverez becoming available, so missed out.
Tbf to Gyokeres, he did get 20 goals last year. |  |

Swansea had him on loan from Brighton and he was proper rubbish. I was amazed he then went off to Coventry and Sporting and did well. He was back to the version I remembered last night. For the money and hype he’s underwhelming for sure. |  |

That makes a lot of sense off the basis of last night. He didn't fit their system at all. It's mental that Arteta has been given so much time at Arsenal which has paid off, yet can't sign the players he wants for the system he has established (successfully too!)

Vini Jr used Arsenal to wangle an improved 6 year deal with RM and Athletico were not going to sanction any sale of Alverez as they do not want him to go to Barcelona. Arsenal screwed themselves. |  | | |

Eze doesn't seem to fit in at Arsenal either, he may just be better as a big fish in a small pond like Palace but he's a shadow of that player at Arsenal |  |

I thought he was head and shoulders the worst player on the pitch. I was surprised he didn't get taken off because it looked like he couldn't have anywhere close to fully fit. I guess Arteta was trying to play him into some form. |  |

It was a mistake and not the players fault. He thrives on service into the box, Arsenal prefer wide men who do almost anything but provide a stream of regular crosses and balls into the box. Mind you, I think to Arsenal, £55m is change down the back of the sofa territory. You can have as much money as you like, but it doesn't mean you have any class. |  | | |
