I suppose that could be a temptation. It's split clealry by partisan lines already on those topics where tribal positions have been fomred (e.g. migrnat deal, nuclear subs, social rental housing).

I found a more fundamental problem in that I couldn't give a crap on most and had no idea about the rest. There's no option for those.

The social rental housing one is super depressing. 99% of those identified as on the right and 72% in the centre think we shouldn't let foreigners with Indefinite Leave to Remain have parity in support (in this case access to social housing). Clearly these people have never met, or worked with or married a foreign person. They are exactly the same as us and if they have ILR we should treat them the same as any other member of the community (I'd go further and say we should treat any body living in a community as an equal member of that community; from a visiting student who may only be here on a 3 months student visa while working on their PhD to a Polish immigrant who came over when they joined the EU and has spent over 20 years living here, working, raising a family, etc). When the fk did we become so bitter, mean and small-minded?

Apparently I differ from the population because I think that the state pension should be means tested.

I said a strong 'no' to that one. It was only one of two I had an opinion on. If everyone has spent their life paying their NI contributions, it has to be a universal payment commensurate to their level of contribution. Otherwise you're opening the floodgates to claims to not pay NI, leading to even less money to pay for said pensions. Shirley?

i said yes to that one. given we have a fiscal crisis it seems wrong to me that someone with an income of, say, £100,000 still gets a full state pension. what if you said people in receipt of the state pension paid the additional income tax rate (45%) on income above the higher rate threshold. that way you'd claw some of it back (up to about 25%) if your income reaches the additional tax threshold and beyond (ie £125,000). that way ni would still make sense and also act as insurance.

Those who have paid their national insurance have paid for their state pension. Higher earners will have paid more too. To means test it would encourage people not to take out any private pension so that they would still qualify for the state one instead. The biggest issue for me is that the Government (historically) has entered into a contract with people paying NI that effectively means we are entitled to NHS healthcare and a state pension.

Change the triple lock by all means. Look at simplifying the system by all means but means testing isn't the answer. How much would the assessment for means testing it cost too?

that's why i'd integrate it into the tax system. losing a quarter of the state pension once you hit £125,000pa wouldn't really disincentivise private pension saving.

“Those who have paid their national insurance have paid for their state pension”

That’s the entire problem though they haven’t! Or rather they have, but it’s been spent on other things. And it’s simply not enough paid in for current life expectancies.

There is no pot of pension money that’s been set aside, it relies entirely on current tax payers and borrowing to fund. In the fraud world they call that a Ponzi scheme!

There used to be 5 tax payers for every retiree, now it’s 2.5. That’s why we have a record tax burden, yet sh1te public services. Unfortunately politicians in the UK are too spineless to reform them properly so the young continue to be screwed.

Morning!

Given the state pension isn't funded, but then neither is access to social housing, do you think there is a difference to people who do not have a history of being UK taxpayers receiving other forms of benefit?

Bore da!

We're not talking about people who do not have a history of being a UK tax payer when it comes to pensions. Given they're already effectively contribution-assessed; peolpe reciving their full pension would have made full contributions.

To address another point raised on the thread, it doesn't matter if those contributions have already been spent historically either. All government's with a central bank create money when they spend. They're not saving up our taxes in money boxes before they spend.

We'd be breaking a major social contract we have with thegovernment if they suddenly turned around and said to some people, 'no you can't have your pensions after all'. They could do it, but it would be one of the largest scandals of the century I'd have thoughs. It'd be carnage.

Edit - Anyway, as a PS I don't trust this survey site. It looks to be a bit of an exercise in logical fallacies. This morning's israel/military action Q is a false premise - there are other more obvious repsonses. The claiming asylum Q is a legal fallacy - refugees have a legal right to claim asylum irrepsective of mode of entry. I wouldn't trust that this has good intentions. Maybe it's just a case of being run by people with no survey design experience, but it's setting off my spidey senses.

“To address another point raised on the thread, it doesn't matter if those contributions have already been spent historically either. All government's with a central bank create money when they spend. They're not saving up our taxes in money boxes before they spend.”

That’s missing the point though - if it were fully funded, that pensaion fund could compound over time as per a SWF or private pension. I agree there is a social contract in place, it’s not the fault of pensioners that they are outliving the projections when the state pension was created. But it needs to be tapered away over time (not sure why people always assume an immediate cutoff) and shifted to the private sector, it doesn’t have to penalise those who rely on it. It’s not that controversial, Denmark have largely done this and have a much healthier level of debt, and beat the UK in just about every standard of living metric.

Also disagree the talk of ‘fairness’ the young are funding the retired with much better (state) pensions than we will ever see, whilst other public services crumble.

Printing more money has been disastrous (QE) to people’s spending power, and weakens Sterling. If that wasn’t the case we wouldn’t be borrowing at all. Both the BoE and ECB have spoken around the inflationary effect of creating money. I’m amazed that people argue for more of the same, the state pension is not sustainable in its current form, even the more socialist Scandi’s have realised this. The young are still penalised if more money is printed, because additional taxes will be needed to prop up sterling and manage inflation.

Lots there to agree with. I don't know how we solve the issue of the rising cost of funding retirement though. Means testing is one way, as is drastically raising the age of retirement.

But this would be very difficult to do without significant long term planning (yes, long term planning + government don't mix). You need to give people decades to be able to prep for retirement.

Take a look at the projection of how the cost of the state pension will rise by 2050! from 12% of all government spending to around 20%!

As we've discussed on other threads, you can't tax your way out of this.

Carnage? totally. The Waspi women being a good recent example.
