There is a farmhouse pickle my local farm shop sells which is nice than branston, but they haven’t had any in stock lately

I'd favour a basic onion chutney, Sainsburys do a good one, think that works better with an extra mature cheddar.

I was working on a farm as a student and when I put slices of local cheddar on warm buttered toast and strawberry jam the farm manager's wife exclaimed " A Yorkshireman!!" I quickly confirmed that I am Essex born and bred - but love strong Cheddar on anything - almost.

Extra mature cheddar is the way to go IMO. Mild cheddar I wouldn't even classify it as cheese. There are some mild cheeses that are quite nice; Cheddar isn't one of them.

My mum used to make the most awesome macaroni cheese when I was a kid. I found out how awesome a cook my mum was when I stayed around a mate's house for a sleepover, and we were having macaroni cheese for dinner; I was really looking forward to it. My mate's mum had made one of my childhood favourite ever dishes with mild cheddar. Every monthful was a struggle to swallow.

I’m Suffolk born, but do enjoy a nice slab of vintage cheddar with some thick toast, butter and strawberry jam… with a nice glass of port to follow.
