I think there might have been an Olympics in Nazi Germany also in 1936 and there was no boycott of that ( Great Britain achieved a 10th place finish in the overall medal table. ). https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org |
Pretty certain that Dalymount Park in Ireland wasn't an Olympic venue. Anyhoo, a few months before the outbreak of WWII, but after the annexation of the Sudetneland and Austria, the Irish Football team played another friendly match against Germany. The date was May 23,1939 and the venue was Bremen, Weserstadion. The score was 1-1 . The German and the Irish team both did the Nazi salute. This was also about 6 months after the Kristallnacht. How about this: In 1943 Oliver J. Flanagan was elected as a Fine Gael politician to the Dail. In his maiden speech he said the following: “How is it that we do not see any of these Acts directed against the Jews, oliverwho crucified Our Saviour nineteen hundred years ago, and who are crucifying us every day in the week? How is it that we do not see them directed against the Masonic Order? How is it that the I.R.A. is considered an illegal organisation while the Masonic Order is not considered an illegal organisation? There is one thing that Germany did, and that was to rout the Jews out of their country. Until we rout the Jews out of this country it does not matter a hair’s breadth what orders you make. Where the bees are there is the honey, and where the Jews are there is the money.” His son Charles Flanagan was the Minister for Justice and Equality in Ireland until 2020.

I believe some bloke on twitter believed that the game against Israel will be one of the darkest days in Ireland's history. Baxters gave the game against Nazi Germany as an example of something much darker. The IHRA defines "Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis" as being an example of antisemitism. Nobody did that so stand down. [Post edited 24 Sep 17:04]

So therefore a comparison is clearly being made between Nazi Germany and the modern state of Israel. As in which is more dark? Playing the Nazis in 1936 or the far right genocidal state of Israel in 2026 And i will decide when to stand down, thanks love

Nobody was comparing "contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis". I'll leave it there as you either don't understand or are being wilfully disingenuous.

Yes, but isn't that just an extension, because surely "which is more dark" is a comparative judgement about* policy? Or am I missing something? edit: * i.e. which can only be based upon a comparison of policy of the two alternatives. [Post edited 24 Sep 17:18]

I find the best way to avoid being compared with abhorrent genocidal states is to avoid committing genocide Quite simple really

And with so many examples of genocides through the ages, Holodomor, the Cambodian Genocide, the Armenian Genocide, the Rwandan Genocide, Assad's Syria or Saddam's Iraq, Ione has to wonder why people are so keen to use the comparison with the Nazis when condemning the actions of the world's only Jewish state? It's as if people want to attack them as Jews rather than attack them for their actions.

As I have GlasgowBlue on ignore because of his pro Zionist rhetoric protected by the Golden Dome of antisemitism, I don't get his input but agree with your response.

The point of the post is absolutely not to compare Israel with Nazi Germany. But I think you knew that, and decided to spew anyway.

| Israel v Ireland already going well then… on 22:29 - Sep 24 with 737 views | Swansea_Blue | There’s a compelling case for them to be banned from sporting competitions. If Russia can be I don’t see how this is much different. Arguably it’s a lot worse, but then I get the feeling Palestinians are seen as more expendable than Ukrainians. You could have the same arrangement where Israelis can compete but just not under the Israeli flag (although I wonder the point of that as it waters down the pressure gained by excluding them, but that’s a separate argument). Whether they should or shouldn’t is out of my hands, but I’d have thought there’s a case. I’m surprised it hasn’t been discussed more (maybe it has and I’m just unaware). | |

To me it looks like he’s playing snooker rather than aiming a gun, but I’m sure the ref had a better look at it than me from a picture on the BBC. Beggars belief but then is also so believable. I hadn’t seen this when I posted a bit earlier about the case for a ban. The case just got bigger.

I honestly think it’s more stupidity than c**tiness. Young 20 year old privileged footballer who probably thought it would be great bantz and egged on by his mates pre match without having any conscious thought as to quite how vile and moronic it really was. Bit like that moron Man U fan a couple years ago who wore a shirt for the Old Trafford game against Liverpool with the number 97 and the name Not Enough on the back. Awful. Vile. Grim. And there’s no way at the time that idiot had any real idea of the consequences when he was rightfully found on social media, named and shamed, sacked, then arrested and then chucked in prison for a few weeks. Would he do it again? Almost definitely not. Lesson learnt. Everyone moves on. This Israeli footballer should have been sent straight off and then banned by fifa for a few matches while the world inevitably crucifies him on social media and the like. Lesson to be learnt for pure stupidity.
