My footie mad nephew is desperate to go to the San Siro before it shuts at the end of the season
With it being such an iconic stadium and Malaga flights to Milan always being so cheap and never been to an Italian game before, i thought this is an Uncle task I can get involved in!
I know alot of you would've gone in 2001 to see us but also has anyone been to watch one of the Milan teams play? any tips? What's it like on Matchdays?
Growing up in the 90's and football Italia on C4 seeing the great AC teams with Baresi,Maldini, the Dutch trio and Baggio etc, I'm definitely more of a AC fan But Inter have been alot more successful recently but any difference on the nuetral supporter experience?

It was absolutely magnificent, couldn't recommend it enough.

I worked for a few weeks in Milan in the 2000's, we got tickets for a mid week champions league game quite easily - i believe we bought them from a bank/post office.
No trouble apart from the stadium is a bit in the middle of nowhere. | | | |

Went to the San Siro a few years back and saw AC Milan play Roma.
Very glad I went as it was certainly an 'experience'.
Where we sat in the terraces, there were no seats as such. Sat directly on to concrete, which to put it kindly, we're filthy!
We were given a free newspaper on the concourse and when I explained I couldn't read Italian, was told it was to sit on. Which ultimately I was grateful for! (Lots of dried on chewing gum etc)
The support for both teams were very vocal, so as i said was worth doing.
Got tickets pretty easily at the ground earlier in the day too. |  | | |

Happy to give you a few pointers, just let me know any specifics...
Firstly, I was able to purchase a ticket directly from the Milan website around 3-4 weeks in advance. No membership or similar required, was able to purchase when tickets were made available to the public - though I should add I purchased on the first day available, and not too many left. On match day itself attendance was full capacity, c.75k

The Ultras are located in the Blue zone. Away fans in part of the upper Green near Gate 1. I was in Red block 238. Approx £30 for my ticket.
Although in begone years I've found Italian match day experiences pretty 'full on'(!), i.e. not one for the family, but was pleasantly surprised this time and kinda regretted not taking my wife and daughter to enjoy the experience.
You can show tickets on paper or digitally via phone on match day - BUT you must take photo ID with you, passport and/or driving licence. I didn't realise the first time I went to the San Siro and despite my pleas, wasn't allowed in and missed the game.
The stadium itself is in the city centre - super easy to access via Metro (i.e. underground train). About 10-15 mins on the Metro from the Duomo, and the Metro station exit has the San Siro right in front of you, about a 2 mins walk away.
If you want to get memorabilia, I'd recommend going to the club shops in the city centre earlier in the day, or even the day before. Shops are at the ground but fewer stock and bigger queues.
Despite the footie quality being way off the world class levels we watched in the 90's and noughties, I loved visiting this iconic ground. The atmosphere was great - before and during the game. Good views from everywhere I could see.
Easy to get served beers in my seat from a guys walking around with one of the backpack beer dispensers. Overall facilities a little dated compared to the new mega stadiums of today, but still very decent. | | | |

A couple of extra things...
I'm pretty sure the stadium is all seater now. I didn't see any standing terracing.
Not sure of the logistics for Inter matches, but I'd be very surprised if there's much if any differences to the Milan matches.
Sadly I visited just a couple of days before Omari signed, so didn't get to see him in action - but it was nice to Modric before he retires. Quite a bit of English player interest this season for both AC and Inter!
Finally, as another poster mentioned above, I understand the stadium will still be in use for several seasons yet while the new stadium (on adjacent land) is being built. Scheduled for demolition around 2030 or 2031, so no major rush to get there this season. [Post edited 22 Sep 20:20]

I was also at the EUFA cup match in the early 2000’s and was quite unimpressed with the ground too. We got beaten 4-0 I recall. Police kept us in the ground after the game for a long time and remember me and my mate couldn’t find anywhere for a drink after the match. Compared to the Stad de France in Paris, Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, Bayern Munich stadium, plus many in the UK, it was old fashioned, tired and uncomfortable. | | | |

The ground was impressive just not high tech or modern. A thing of large scale. We were beaten 4-1 and they fielded possibly the greatest player of all time as a substitute, the return of Ronaldo el Fenonimo R9 from injury. The Ultras light their flares and have their banners. Its a proper old classic stadium, one to tick off.
And I was lucky enough to watch Ipswich there. |  |

Years ago in an old job we took customers out to Milan for a few days on the beers and decided to take them for the Museum / Stadium Tour which was brilliant
Along with the Nou Camp (original) I'd say the San Siro was / is one of the most iconic football stadiums for me personally
As someone else has said I do remember it being a little off the beaten track and in the middle of nowhere

I went in 2018 for Milan v Juve, the opposition might have impacted the experience, but it was a nightmare getting in. No sort of queueing system, just a free for all with 2/3 ticket inspectors scanning at a small gate. |  |

Underwhelmed in what way ? Its a classic stadium, celebrated its 100th birthday this last weekend. Its got history in bucketloads, and we are part of that history, the Milan fog always makes night games more atmospheric.
Its like everyone used to complain about the Old Wembley, facilities were poor for spectators. Yet quarter of a century later the new Wembley hasn't created the aura or the history of the old place, and people wistfully wish the two towers had been kept and its the archetypal football tourist ground now, no one speaks about the hallowed Wembley turf anymore..
It will be the same for the San Siro, its replacement might be shiny new and better for spectators but it wont capture the same presence the San Siro has now and probably won't ever if it lasts another 100 years which it wont. | | | |

I liked the “Anywhere, Anywhere” stewards.
The stadium looked spectacular from the outside, but was very tired on the inside. The only thing that didn’t really leave a great impression was the poo in one of the urinals [Post edited 23 Sep 22:00]
