Allowing football fans to drink in the stands is the kind of dumb idea only a Prime Minister seeking cheap popularity, with his man-of-the-people-but-sits-in-the-posh-seats perspective, could come up with. An unbelievably dumb idea, undoubtedly resulting in idiots showering others with their £7 pints, and filming it for good measure.

Maybe start by allowing in a certain section only, then it’s a choice if you want to be covered in others beer/ up and down as people go to the bar. Make section over 18’s too.

I suspect Brazilian fans, along with cricket and rugby followers here, are a little more civilised than the small percentage of amoeba brained idiots that go into football grounds here that think it’s funny to hurl beer over others. I’m sure even the most desperate can manage 50 mins without a beer.

Beer on the concourse and Fanzone - absolutely fine. Keep it there.

Haha, no! In my experience, Brazilian football fans have a lot more in common with English footy fans than with rugby or cricket fans. It’s absolutely raucous and a total carnival of colour and noise, with plenty of beer going everywhere when a goal goes in.

Having said that, it depends very much on which bit of the ground you’re in. If you go to the equivalent of the north stand, then yeah you’re in danger of getting covered in brahma after a last minute winner, but that is largely restricted to the livelier sections - not hard to avoid it if it’s not your cup of tea. As someone suggested above, maybe allowing beer in the stands in specific sections would be a good middle ground, as it would allow people to easily opt in/out in line with their preferences.

Absolutely spot on. Bereft ideas after 3 months. Unbelievably sad indictment of another middle manager elevated to highest echelons of government. This Labour Party foists mediocrity on us time and time again. Well overdue a positive change and some much needed energy and monentum.

After 15 years of having a beer or cocktail at my seat during sports, I respectively disagree, what's worst is paying $500 and having the blinds down when kick off starts, what is that all about!

Why is everyone convinced people are going to throw beer on each other? Some struggle to sing!

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Completely agree. People should have the choice.

I’m not sure people would lob it in the air, but I’ve been in standing areas behind the goal in the bundesliga, and it just goes everywhere with the limbs when there’s a big goal.

Over there they’ve boys and girls walking through the stands with backpacks full of beer selling it where you stand.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

I remember before the ban, and it never caused any trouble at any game I was at. People who needed to drink were tanked up before they got to the ground. Nowadays the problem is often other than alcohol.
The ridiculous thing is being in the upstairs bar in the North Stand and having to have the blinds drawn in case the sight of grass while beer in hand drives you insane.

You can order with your app direct to your seat in some stadiums over here, what's not to like. I am sure JasonDozzell would be on board!

Before he was PM he pointed out that fans could have a pint whilst watching rugby at the Hill Dickinson but not Everton and it wasn’t fair.
A journalist asks him about this on the flight over to America and it’s taken off. He’s hardly put this on the top of his to do list.

Well, he shouldn’t have commented on it, should he? Should stick to being mayor of a northern town. He may not be interested in international affairs, but they are interested him. He has no ideas other than tax and spend. Bring on an election please, and let’s get rid of these contemptible socialists who are bankrupting us all.

The oddity with the rule is, that you could go and see Man United Women at Old Trafford and have your pint in the seats. You can return the next day to watch the men, and you can't do it.

I appreciate that the audience make up is different, but men's football is now the only sport this is banned in, and I think all the rule really does is encourage early drinking and necking pints at half time.

Don’t try and straw man me. He should have thought about his answer a little bit more and not jumped to what he thought was the immediate populist answer. Shouldn’t be beyond such a seasoned town mayor, surely?

Yep, literally every other sport, and football in every other European country (with far more rowdy fans than England) manages it. The kind of laws made up by politicians that have never been to a football game - it’s classism, the working man’s sport (vs egg chasing and cricket), ‘the plebs at football can’t be trusted’.

We employ stewards use them. If someone throws (an expensive) pint, chuck them out the ground - bans for repeat offenders as with other violations.

I hate this whole ‘punish everyone for the actions of others’ culture. I bet there are many on here who’ve been coerced back to the office for example, because others have been abusing WFH. Or putting the whole class in detention for a couple of naughty kids.

In grounds where literally every inch is covered with CCTV, it really isn't an issue. Throw your drink (or anything else for that matter) and it's an x game ban, do it again and you're no longer welcome.

I've watched football in Germany where beer is drunk in huge volume with little or no sign of trouble. It's about time football in the UK was given the opportunity to emerge from the dark ages.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Forget the beer.... I tried to take a sealed, undrunk, coffee into the club shop once and I was refused entry by the elite Achilleus lot, even after I said i'd pay for anything that I "spilled" on, with my sealed coffee. I was going to buy a new Town hat, as it was a chilly day, which is why I bought myself a warm drink pre-game!

I had to go hatless for the game! Where is my justice?

Don't they know the new rules?

1. Clutch a cup of coffee whilst walking anywhere.
2. Peer at phone at all times.
3. Own a dog.
4. When on a train commence eating and drinking immediately upon sitting down irrespective of time of day.
