| Diesel and petrol rationing.... on 07:41 - Sep 28 with 2148 views | You_Bloo_Right | Not currently seeing/hearing anything on any major news outlet. AFAIK the government has previously discussed plans for an emergency response in the event of fuel shortages which may include rationing, reduced speed limits, etc. but I've seen nothing about the imminent implementation of such plans. Not to say this won't come of course just that it doesn't seem to be on the cards just yet. | |

That’s because it’s nonsense- certainly in the case of petrol since we don’t import it from impacted regions. Most of our oil and gas (imported) is from the US and Norway. The US is the world’s largest producer and beneficiary of current prices. Diesel we have limited refining capacity these days, it’s likely only an issue if the US blocked/reduced diesel exports to prioritise their economy.

The only knock on is that some of our diesel is refined in Europe, where more oil is imported from the Middle East. Fortunately we reduced reliance on Middle East crude due to the constant instability. Same too for the US which ramped up capacity to become the world’s largest producer. *of course still subject to global prices but reduced supply chain risk. [Post edited 28 Sep 8:15]

The effing Daily Express! Apparently the UK's diesel reserves are down to "just" 42 days - which seems quite a long time in modern supply chain terms. Plus the headline appears framed in a "could we be facing rationing" clickbaity fashion

The price of diesel could have a huge impact on the US midterms. Some rural states which are traditionally deeply Republican are coming into play because the price of diesel is so crucial to agriculture and farming etc. States like Kansas which have been Republican since bread came sliced could potentially swing Democrat. Trump seems to assume that his administration is one of the only ones which is impervious the anger of the electorate over rising prices and cost of living. Interestingly, if the rising costs were only due to tariffs, I think his base would have swallowed them, but as it's primarily due to a war few of them support, the Republicans could be in for a pasting.

Banning exports now will do very little to alleviate the price rises, as they are tied to global rates. And they don't have the fiscal headroom to subsidise to any real extent

Indeed, It's the usual lets scare the British public into mass panic buy tactic that works every time. It's not very hard to get people, especially the middle class, to panic buy! Even if there was suddenly shortage, one thing Covid showed is how many people can, in fact, work from home, but when people aren't commuting, they aren't buying fuel (and paying the tax on it) so they needed us back on the roads, pumping again, but they dressed it up as people working from home all being lazy, and used the Daily Mail and co to push that narrative!

Ironically, a US diesel ban would actually push prices higher (globally and domestically in the US) as countries scrambled for supplies, and paying huge premiums on spot prices. Lack of diesel refining capacity has been an issue since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, firstly from Sanctions, and then the Ukrainian successes attacking Russian energy infrastructure.

I agree with the working from home, already going far less into the office due to the cost. If every company was to allow their employees to work from home and people stopped using their cars like during lock down. Watch how fuel companies start finding discounts that were not their before due to massive loss of profits. The same for the government in massive loss of tax coming in. I find this whole world leaders, richest of society playing games to make themselves and chums richer at the cost of massive insider trading and downfall of the worlds financial economy massively draining. speaking of which i started watching some series called Industry which had not heard of until a few weeks ago, on BBC and gives massive insight into how it all works and how nefarious people can be and how quickly economies can collapse like during the big short.

You do realise that oil companies don’t set the price of crude right? If the UK went into WFH, it would have zero impact on the global price of crude. We use just over 1pc of annual global production. Nor would it solve the shortfall from diesel refineries. In lockdown the price crashed because there was a global shutdown, including manufacturing and transport. And the Industry is a drama not a documentary… it’s not that realistic. Being in a regulated role comes with a lot of responsibility and scrutiny.

I appreciate it will have little impact on the global oil prices - but it will have influence over the tax and levies added for profit margins before it gets the pump, record profits and taxes even after the fact tells its own story, Yes fully appreciate Industy is a drama, the big short was a movie but of course they are based on aspects that are true and happen in every day life. Ironaclly in the series lioness was an interesting subplot and then a few days later we have this Raf bomb scare. Hopefully it’s a massive wake up call for all involved

But the government can have the biggest impact on pump prices, the retailer margin is usually 5pc or under, pennies. Whereas duty plus VAT is almost half the cost - which is why most of Western Europe has even higher fuel prices (more duty). Even the Lib Dem’s were calling for a temporary cut in duty. Not sure what a working from home mandate helps other than diesel drivers pockets, by all means encourage employers to allow it, but a mandate achieves nothing other than more government overreach. Logistics costs will rise, so it’s probably beneficial to the wider economy to cut fuel taxes temporarily.
