When a player leaves Ipswich….. 13:21 - Oct 3 with 924 viewsBelsteadCav

Following on from the Parrot thread

Are there any that go on to have a better career?

There aren’t many, and you can go back years.

Taricco probably had a good few years in the Prem with Spurs
Probably Dyer ( when he was fit)
And you can also put Darren Bent in there as well

But I can’t think of anyone from the last 10/15 years to better themselves

In more recent times, McAuley, Delaney and McGoldrick. Delaney underrated by many, but had a good few years in the Prem. Gareth and David got the career spells at the top which their talent deserved, seriously good players.

Trevoh Chalobah springs to mind.

McAuley and Delaney went on to have some decent seasons in the Premier League having looked pretty average Championship defenders with us.

Tyrone Mings. Matt Holland. Herman Herrideson. I just realised the last two were much more than 15 years! Wickham played a fair bit of premier league football.

Mings, Cresswell, Webster, Walters, Bramble for permanent.

If we're counting loans there's probably loads:
- Giiiio
- Townsend
- Chris Wood
- Ryan Fraser
- Begovic
- Maitland-Niles
- Jack Colback
- Jordan Rhodes (arguably given where we were when he was at his peak)
- Trevoh Chalobah

Christ I’ve forgotten about a lot of those

And Keane has a lot to answer for about Rhodes

I’m not sure McGoldrick bettered himself

Delaney was definitely underrated

Weren't we offered Andros Townsend and Jake Livermore (both of whom were on loan from Spurs) in return for Connor Wickham? Or is that just a rumour?

Both Townsend and Livermore went on to have longer and better careers than Wickham, although that didn't seem likely at the time.

Did McGoldrick score 10 in the Premier League the same season we were relegated to League One?

Mark Noble, if we're talking loans.

Didn’t he play in the same team as Simon Walton? At the time I thought was a much better player and go on to have a really good career - but they never materialised for him.

Totally agree, Walton was definitely the better player

Of course he did. He was over 30 when he left but managed two full Premiership seasons, 10 Premiership goals, more international football than he'd managed with us, put his injury problems well behind him, more goals and a better scoring ratio after leaving us than before, and still now playing full seasons at the level we got him from when he's nearly 39. Not even a question over whether he bettered himself.

He scored 10 across 2 seasons in the prem when we already in League One.

He was promoted to the prem with them the season we were relegated.

I did wonder if my timings were a bit off. I forgot it was two seasons too.

That’s what I thought!

But then I mentioned my view to a friend of mine whose opinion I generally trust on football matters and he basically said “haha, no”.

That's harsh. GMc was always regarded as a really solid centre back and Delaney was criminally underrated. During the 09/10 season where Keane bored the town to tears they were rock solid as a CB pairing.
