Would be surprised if he's not a little annoyed after the world cup when he didn't get a chance. I'm sure he will work his way back into their squad.
| Anybody know why George Hirst is not involved with Scotland anymore... on 23:25 - Oct 3 with 3229 views | Smoresy | Some way down the pecking order now with McBurnie starting in the PL, Ure in La Liga and Bowie in Serie A. Three injured too in Adams, Shankland and Stewart, while Dykes missed out despite being in the goals for Millwall. | | | |

Looking at the mostly garbage turning out for Scotland in the World Cup, I thought he deserved a chance, J2. I guess he’s just not for the current manager, but he’s a good player and I also think he will work his way back into it.

It baffles me that people don't know this, unless people seriously believe the Stoke City bench is Scotland international level.

Doubly so as they didn't even use him.

| Good for Town for 2 seasons; now out of form at Stoke - £4m at risk on 15:32 - Oct 4 with 1888 views | unstableblue | Scotland not going to select when can’t get a start at Stoke Shame as he’s shown in league one, champ and premier league that he can be quality Our £10m fee was only £6m up front and imagine the balance is linked to appearances/ goals. That is true, and there's no doubt that McKenna is (was?) a first rate coach. But having spent so very much money on our squad, it shouldn't have been as limited as it was. McKenna was still trying to buy a right winger in Femi Azeez (even once we had spent a big fortune on McAteer and Egeli, who for various reasons were not as effective as Burns but cost thousands of times as much) rather than fix the number 9 shaped hole in our squad which was glaring to most fans. Oh yeah, and Akpom never got a chance in his actual position, despite Hirst's inadequacies. Their respective records this season hardly support McKenna's approach. | | | |

It was still amazing for me that hirst and azon went 14 games without a goal and neither akpom nor egeli got a shot.

It wasn't that bizarre to take Hirst. It was bizarre to take Dykes.

I agree. Poor old George has had a tough time of it lately. I’d pick McBurnie as first choice every time. So related to that, I can’t understand how Dykes is an automatic on the team sheet. He’s a terrible footballer. He limits them to being a team that thinks they can only compete by being thuggish flat track bullies. They’ve got no chance of progressing with him leading the line. It’s right up there with Keane’s big forearms bollox.

Yup. I lost count of the number of times last season I kept saying that we did not have a top 6 striker at the club, despite all of the money we had spent. I added how hard it is to get promoted without one, and I thought it would ultimately be our downfall. At that level, our defence was a strength. Of course, McKenna's coaching got us home. So it was job done, and ultimately a job well done. Lots of credit where it's due. But one detail I added last season, which made me think that we weren't scoring enough to finish top 2 was the lack of goals from the number 10 position. We had managed to succeed in the double promotion seasons with goals coming from the number 10 position, which we didn't really have last season, because a fair few were tried there, and none really contributed in that way. Akpom and SS obviously didn't work out there. Nunez hit his pair of wonder freekicks, which were a pleasure, but I think there was only one open play league goal all season from him. We dragged ourselves over the line with goals from the left wing. Players sometimes work better at club A than club B, because of personalities, systems, form, random chance, injuries, whatever. But sadly Hirst has cemented the proof this season that he is not really a top half Championship striker. I think Norwich still have 2 that are better, despite losing Sargent. And Hirst is still 27 - it's not like he's over the hill. But hey, that's the past, and the signings of Emersonn and Flemming each individually look excellent. Together, they look even better because (a) we're not understaffed in that key position, and (b) they have complementary attributes, which means that they can be the appropriate tool for different situations, and they can teach each other a thing or two.

That is bizarre but they have generally favoured Dykes over him which is equally mad, Dykes is incredibly limited?

He statistically has just come off his best ever season, must feel hard done by after achieving that, and a promotion he's out of the picture internationally, and is playing in the mire with Stoke in the Championship. Not a heroic end for a player who helped turn this club around.
