Actually surprised at how reasonable everyone is being. Obviously now I've arrived the reasonable levels are on the way down so I apologise in advance.

They could making hey on this, particularly when all the forecast storms hit. As it is, i'm looking out the window at my little garden and over the weekend, the rose bush has decided to flower again in early Oct. I'm no gardenner, but that can;t be right, surely?

There's also some batty stuff coming out the Tory conference on the environment that Polanksi in the lead up to the by-election could have taken advantage of. Instead, he seems to have gone into relative social media silence. This from Jill Rutter from the Institute for Government thinktank. "You might hate the Environment Agency and Natural England - but am not sure how good your evidence base is that there is a latent majority for poorer air quality, more pollution and (even more) destruction of nature #CPC2026 - and homes that are going to require big retrofits." I think it needs a massive reboot and massive investment and empowerment so it can actually do some serious good, but there doesn't seem to be the political or public will to face up to that sort of reality.

From the Guardian. Prospect, a union representing many of the workers at the the Environment Agency and Natural England, has criticised the Tory proposal to scrap both quangos. Mike Clancy, its general secretary, said: "It is ridiculous for the Conservatives to blame environmental regulators for the housing crisis, especially when its own MPs are often among the most vociferous opponents of new housing developments. The reality is that Conservative budget cuts have left these regulators struggling to perform their vital functions with “lack of resources” the most common reason for planning delays. The solution is to restore their funding to adequate levels, not scrap vital safeguards, as both the Corry and Fingleton reviews recommended. This announcement is further proof that the politics of deregulation are a dead end, offering no solution to the challenges this country faces while putting safety and the environment at risk."

We’ve been living with effects of this one for the last few months it’s quite spectacular in the difference to a normal El Niño or La Niña and we’re REALLY concerned about the next months…a ridiculous and trivial example but gives an idea… we have a flock of parakeets that hang out in a tree outside our house… they religiously arrive late December and buggar off in late March … they never left this year. Lima has a microclimate similar to San Francisco .. April-October is miserable as fooooook .. cold, damp and no sun…. We’ve been in. Our shorts and sandals and the fan full blast the whole of our winter .. normally the fan is tucked away for 6 months and we live in warm clothes as we don’t have central heating here. The flooding up north is on an epic scale.

Sadly for us, we've lost between 10 and 15 well-established evergreen trees and shrubs. It doesn't help that we are on clay which gets very wet in winter. I suppose they just couldn't cope with the exceptionally dry clay soil this summer, but nothing like this has happened in the 27 years we've lived here. I didn't really spot things were so bad until it was probably too late, but couldn't do anything anyway due to a hosepipe ban. [Post edited 5 Oct 17:43]

Those mega illegal waste sites that made the news in recent times will become a lot more common without the EA, and would have been less likely to occur in the first place with a properly funded EA.

When this thread started, did anyone else have the impact of a mega El Niño on parakeets in Lima on page five, on their bingo card?

We live alongside a stream. 25 years ago the banks used to be regularly cleared of vegetiation by the local drainage board to prevent flooding. Not long after, the body was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Environment Agency, and since then the banks have never been cut by it. As I own the land under the stream I am a riparian owner, and have the responsibility to ensure the watercourse and its banks are maintained and kept free of blockages that could affect the natural flow of water or increase the risk of flooding. This I do (including by getting into the stream) but none of the other riparian owners along the stretch of stream do the same, not least because many are elderly and the banks are pretty steep and inaccessible. Yet another example of cost-cutting, and with the risk of flooding to boot. [Post edited 5 Oct 18:03]

I'm waiting for Trump to declare climate change as a good thing because there have been no Atlantic hurricanes this autumn (tho more Typhoons than usual in the Pacific).

| Looks like the Zionism is Racism motion has passed on 21:57 - Oct 5 with 515 views | DJR | The Green Party of England and Wales is out of step with the rest of the European Greens. https://europeangreens.eu/news The EGP has always supported a two-state solution, with self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians, grounded in recognition of Israel’s and Palestine’s equal right to exist as sovereign states, with the recognition of the State of Palestine as an important step towards achieving this solution. As part of the European Greens, the Green Party of England and Wales has contributed to forming the position, including the two-state solution, throughout the years. Yesterday, the Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales voted on a resolution called “Zionism is Racism.” The European Green Party leadership and several of our Member Parties have been in contact with the GPEW leadership beforehand in order to express our deep concern about it. The resolution “Zionism is Racism” as voted yesterday goes against our agreed positions of the EGP and its Member Parties, therefore as EGP we unequivocally distance ourselves from it. We condemn in the strongest terms the genocide against Palestinians and the human rights abuses committed by the current Israeli government and have consistently called for EU sanctions against Israel’s government. Equally, the fight against antisemitism and for human rights is an essential part of our political agenda. At a time when antisemitic incidents and violent attacks are surging, it is of utmost importance to be absolutely unambiguous on this: Jewish people must be able to live free from discrimination and violence. We have seen that many members of GPEW, including most of the MPs, have publicly spoken against the resolution and its content, shared posts, videos and personal declarations expressing their concerns. At the Conference, less than 1 per cent of the membership voted. Therefore, as EGP we will immediately demand clarity from the leadership and parliamentary group of GPEW, to understand the official party policy of GPEW, how they position themselves towards the self-determination of Israeli and Jews as well as the protection of Jewish people and members in the party. | | | |
