So the latter then?

Come on, it’s not an either/or is it?

If I was a regular Jew in Israel, the state you describe would have no capacity to guarantee my safety.

The first bit wasn't a real proposition. As I'm sure you're aware.

(I think there's a word for extracting a rhetorical expression from a conversation and disingenuously focussing on that as if literal, to deflect from the real point.)

The second bit wasn't a real question. It's what's really happening.

Deflect away...

There’s no need to make this personal or question my motives.

We are discussing a deeply complex, decades-long geopolitical conflict where multiple things can be true at once. The international community is failing to act, and local security fears make any enforced solution incredibly difficult to implement.

I am responding to the ideas you put forward, not trying to attack you or "deflect." We can disagree on the mechanics without making anything personal.

OK, this is really boring.

My final comment on this dialogue is that when I said 'On the basis of that it sounds like they're proposing a one state, multi-ethnic, multi-faith, fully democratic and just solution which would obviously be a wonderful thing, but there ain't no way that's gonna happen.[emphasis added]' you seemed to take it as if I was proposing such an unworkable pipe dream with 'Run by who exactly?'

This I took, and still do, as disingenuous misinterpretation of what I was saying, continued since then, which is an oft-seen pattern of deflection in my opinion. (But as always I accept the possibility that I may be wrong.)

I'm kicking myself a little for getting drawn into this crap, so won't be adding any more.

It’s more like a cult than a political party. One with incredibly ignorant followers.

2026 in London and a march taking place celebrating a pogrom on the 7th October. Absolutely shameful.

I suspect there will be amendments but the damage is done and the headline is written. It’s a crazy move to allow this to get in in many ways.

There were amendments. They were all voted down. Including the one about protecting Jewish members worshiping at the synagogue of their choice.

Antisemites, Jew haters and crashing bores will be put on ignore.

I've been rather busy this week so haven't posted on TWTD. The following happened during my brief sabbatical:

Two Iranians who came here as undocumented migrants were charged with plotting the mass murder of Jews in Manchester.

A Kuwaiti man, who also came here undocumented, was sentenced to life for trying to break into the Israeli Embassy with a knife.

Various groups who are “politically to the left” held a commemoration of the Battle of Cable St which turned into an “anti-Jew” hate-fest with chants of ''Zionists off our streets”. Jews were forcibly removed from the commemoration.

The Green party passed a motion branding 90% of worldwide Jewry as “racists” whilst voting down amendments safeguarding their Jewish members right to worship at the synagogue of their choice, and called for an end to the world's only Jewish state

It was revealed that the person who drafted and proposed the motion was an unrepentant character witness and friend of a convicted Al-Qaeda terrorist who planned a foiled attack on British soil, called for Zionists to be "hunted" with ''force'' and for synagogues to be protested against.

Pro-Palestinian groups marched through the streets of our major cities on the purposely provocative date of October 7th and protested outside of the offices of the Board of Deputies of British Jews..

What a time to be a Jew in the UK.

RIP to all the people who died in the attacks three years ago.

I feel for their families who are mourning them today. Some of which had no idea for most of the last three years what conditions the hostages were being kept in or if they would ever see them again.

Thoughts with everyone dealing with the mental scars of that day.

She sounds like a real charmer. She only joined the Greens in order to further her antisemitic agenda.

Here she is saying “ Zionists" must be "hunted down in the same way as the Nazis".

I posted about the antisemitic entryism of the Green Party at the beginning of the year only to be told that the smear wagon had rolled on from Labour to the Greens because they were becoming popular. It wasn’t the smear wagon that had rolled on. It was the the people who had infected Corbyn’s Labour Party, which ended with an EHRC guilty verdict of discrimination against its Jewish members, moving on to the Greens.

The membership is unrecognisable from that led by people like Caroline Lucas.

Thank you for the public service in posting that, wouldn't have seen/heard otherwise.

Starts out talking about "Zionest settlers" (which could mean illegal West bank settlers) but very quickly spills into "Zionists in every part of the world" must be "hunted down with force" etc.

Horrifying - how has she not been arrested for hate speech and inciting violence? The Green Party are now investigating her - why aren't the police? (rhetorical question). Many on X replying in shock to the post/video tagged the Met into thread, so they must be aware of it. Maybe an undercover op is going on, I bloody well hope so.

Thanks for posting.

Seeing those portraits of hostages reminds me of three years ago when they were vandalised or removed in many cities before Israel began their invasion. Hamas and their allies knew what they were doing. That’s why I’m so emphatically supportive of Jews. It’s like everything we learnt from the holocaust has been forgotten.

Having worked for a largely Jewish firm of solicitors and with various Jewish friends over the years, as well as a Jewish best friend, I am very empathetic too. But just like a Jewish acquaintance who fronts Jewish Voice for Liberation, I also think it is possible to criticise the Israeli government.

In this connection, it is interesting to note that there was no official memorial in Israel yesterday, the memorials that took place being privately funded. And there were protests by families of the hostages because of the failure of Netanyahu to accept any responsibility.

This from Haaretz.

"In Civilian Ceremony Attended by Tens of Thousands, October 7 Victims' Families and Former Hostages Call for Accountability

Omri Shifroni, a bereaved family member and one of the ceremony's organizers, called to investigate what happend on that day, saying that 'without investigating the truth, we cannot fix things, and we cannot make sure it never happens again'"

And this is the op-ed in today's Times of Israel.

"As with Oct. 7, so too with Sept. 30’s flydubai attack: A failure to prevent obvious deadly threats, and a refusal to take responsibility

It’s October 7. The third anniversary of the worst single-day catastrophe in the history of the State of Israel, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst through the almost unprotected Gaza border and slaughtered some 1,200 people in southern Israel, and abducted 251 more, in an invasion that had been planned for years in plain sight and that Israel’s defense and political leadership had refused to believe was actually going to happen.

Three years later, the vital state commission of inquiry into the disaster, far from having completed its essential work on what went wrong, who was to blame, and how to prevent anything like this happening again, has yet to be appointed. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister that day, for 13 of the 14.5 years before that day, and for the three years since, refuses to have the cataclysm properly investigated because he knows he would be found centrally culpable.

Running for election in less than three weeks, he has instead deflected blame, increasingly crudely, everywhere he can, including by falsely claiming that the IDF and Shin Bet chiefs deliberately failed to wake him in the hours before the massacre to tell him that Hamas was about to invade, even though “all the signs were there.” His wife has insinuated that some in the military senior ranks knew that Gaza’s ruling terrorists were going to invade that morning. And multiple pro-Netanyahu conspiracy theorists have posted false allegations of betrayal from within, including claims that various serving and former defense officials chose to allow what they imagined would be a limited Hamas invasion with the goal of discrediting and consequently ousting Netanyahu."

At the same time, Netanyahu is insistently denying that his encouragement of the flow of hundreds of millions of dollars of Qatari money into Gaza helped finance the Hamas war machine, that he shared the terrible misassessment that Hamas was deterred from attacking Israel, and that he received specific warnings in the weeks and days before the slaughter, from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, that Hamas was mobilizing for a major attack."

Although I hope we see the back of Netanyahu at the end of this month, the next step in this saga seems critical for Israel. The animosity towards Jews didn't start and won't end with Netanyahu.

Hamas are going to try to restore their grip on Gaza, having already commenced. Something needs to empower Gazan's to resist this. Without that there is nobody for Israel to negotiate a way forward with. Hamas will simply regroup and go again, costing the lives of both Israelis and Gazans.

I can't see Israel ever allowing something like 7 October to happen again, and I am not convinced the current government wants a deal anyway.

As it is, Israel currently occupies two-thirds of Gaza, having moved the entire population into the remaining third.

That article is a (far too lengthy) load of old bollox trying to justify the unjustifiable.

And to what purpose, given the motion is out on a limb when it comes to the mainstream in advocating a single Palestinian state, and seems to me to damage the pro-Palestinian cause?

A few pages and posts ago you rather downgraded the importance of defining what the GP motion meant by ‘Zionism’ (apols in advance if I misread you).

I think that Canary article rather highlights the importance of precise definitions of the word!

The article wouldn’t even pass muster in a first-year undergraduate essay - completely lacking in intellectual rigour, full of internal contradictions.

I objected in the strongest possible terms to a motion entitled "Zionism is Racism", and expressed the view that defining Zionism more precisely wouldn't have made it any less objectionable, not least because it included the words "Zionism is Israel's foundational ideology".

I still think definition is crucial, and context needs to be added in each case as to what the author or speaker meant.

Eg you wrote on 4th Oct -
" am also a Zionist in the sense that I believe in a Jewish homeland, so that makes me a racist too."

And you also wrote on 5th Oct
"But of course, a motion aimed at the actions of the Israeli government or even of some settlers in the West Bank would not have been objectionable."

Many people do have expansionist illegal settlers/their ideology as *their* definition of Zionism, indeed I'd argue that was the more common view before the GP motion blew up (which maybe has had one good thing come out of it if it makes people define their terms and language more carefully).

Not having a go at you, we're basically agreeing, I just feel it's incredibly important to be precise with definitions & what's meant in this.

I just don't think such a motion, however Zionism is defined, is the appropriate way to go.

It also has to be seen in the following context (from Wikipedia).

"Greens for Palestine organised, supported and (through leading member Lubna Speitan) proposed the motion "Zionism is Racism"

"Greens for Palestine is a pro-Palestinian group that labelled anti-Zionism as its core belief. The group believes that Zionism is a form of racism, and supports a one-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Somewhat unusually for pro-Palestinian groups, they specifically reject a two-state solution unequivocably - a stance not held by any Palestinian political parties across the spectrum (although PNI leader Mustafa Barghouti has supported the idea in the past).[4] Greens for Palestine rejects the existence of Israel as a recognised state, considering the entire nation, not just the Palestinian Occupied Territories, a "settler colony"."
