Clarke on the right, Philogene on the left.


I do think GON will want to give Philogene a good go on the left Saturday, see if he can find form. But I’d like to see Clarke starting there. Continue his recent form.

Neither Clarke or Philogene have ever had a good performance in that left sided berth.

I was thinking McAteer could allow Ouatarra some freedom to bomb on. Or perhaps Egeli returns sharp from U21 goals.

I wonder what line-up we played behind closed doors. Will have had a focus on that right side - with Clarke, Philogene, and McAteer all available.

Flemming must be pressing Emersonn for that number 9 role - which is exactly the competition we need.

Unlike Palacios, Maeda plays early in the week (tomorrow, Monday, 11.30am UK time), so chances are he can get back relatively early and readjust.

But not sure how well he plays on the right.

I would normally assume Maeda, however, given the international break and him travelling to Asia with Japan one can assume he will be a sub.

Whoever it is will have had two weeks to practise with Outtara and even minutes in a competitive friendly Vs Espanyol. Very likely JP, JC and KMc will have all played minutes across both wings and maybe even Furlong will have switched around too with Outtara.

Compare say to Fulham where pretty much all their starting players minus Leno and Garcia went to play international football.


TLDR: We have had time to prepare for Fatawus absence to not be an excuse come the game's result.

I don't think it sounds harsh, but it is a strange situation in which to find ourselves having spent so very much on the right side under the previous manager.

Most fans unconvinced (trying to use tempered language) that McAteer is a premier league standard RW, and similarly unconvinced that Egeli, for all his potential, is really a RW at all.

Which leaves us with Fatawu, whom I really like. But he's suspended.

On the left, we have Maeda, Philogene and Clarke. It seems to me that our 4th best option on the left, Mehmeti, is better than our 2nd best option on the right. A little lop sided.

Ouattara appears to be the real deal. One swallow does not a summer make, but he deserves the chance to show what we all hope he is. He needs to stay at RB. For me, that means switching a left sided player to the right.

Think Palacios will be touch and go, tough ask to get back readjust Thursday, Friday and go out again Saturday.

Fatawu will also be a big miss, no natural replacement on his level.

Its not harsh. No doubt they're both good players, but neither have shown they're PL quality right now. I think we've got 15 outfield players on recent evidence who need to contribute the vast majority of our minutes. The more the better.

O'Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis, Ouattara, Lukic, Florentino, Palacios, Maeda, Philogene, Clarke, Enciso, Fatawu, Emersonn, Flemming.

No shade on others, but even the likes of Furlong, Nunez, Matusiwa aren't at that level for me, let alone Akpom, Egeli, McAteer etc. They'll have a role to play at times, but there's a big difference between 1 off the bench for 30 minutes vs. 2 or 3 starting.

I think what we have seen over the previous seasons is J Clarke can only really get success on the left and some success he has had cutting in from that side, when he moves over he has to use a different foot which slows him down and the end product is poorer.

I just cant see him starting Kasey and then subbing him off for a player who does not really want to play there in Philo/ Maeda.

Could he have Nunez in the 10 and Enciso on the right? Maybe Outarra plays a deeper RW position?
