Ref Watch on Sky…I enjoy watching but Gallagher continues to be an absolute T* 00:07 - Oct 14 with 2631 viewsbrazil1981

Both Tim Sherwood and Jay Bothroyd said stonewall penalty on Maeda on Saturday! Gallagher insisted it was just a ‘coming together’ just as he said when Chaplin was wiped out v Leicester two years ago! Bloke is a joke!

The 'coming together' was outside the box but then clear contact/trip with Maeda's left foot inside.

I know there have probably been about 22 law changes since, but didn't Harry Clarke concede a pen in our last Prem season (Brentford/Bournemouth?) where the first contact was outside but the pen was given for a 'continuing offence'?

I know it's gone, and i'm grateful the result didn't hinge on it, but it seems that most games you're left with that 'down the other end....' feeling.

Struijk red at Sunderland sums up how poor PL referees are, in live play both ref and lino gave no foul, two other referees (VAR) watching slow motion replays decide it is a foul and red card, match referee watches multiple slow motion replays and decides that it is a red card foul, now after an appeal it has been decided that those three referees made a mistake and the red card was reminded! How could they make such a blatent error?

Typical of click baity media though isn't it.

Somebody has to take a contrary position. If everybody agreed, less people would watch. Even Gallagher must struggle to believe some of the guff he has come out with in the past.

Gallagher is an embarrassment. But a troubling illustration of how refs back each other and engage in rationalisation of obvious mistakes.

That said I think the strujik red is very arguable. Ball is not moving fast and keeper hadn't moved.

Gallagher is no saint but I struggle to criticize anyone who has to spend any time with Jay Bothroyd.

After he dismissed that Chaplin "penalty", that was it for me. He's clearly clueless or just sides with the ref.

I did enjoy a month ago their little disagreement where despite VAR getting it blatantly wrong with an offside (think it was the Manchester derby?), Gallagher said something like "well, they lost focus", after completely ballsing it up.

I expect there are a few ladies who might disagree. Bothroyd is an athletic, good looking guy.

Gallagher is a bit of a tool, but at least he takes it in good grace when they get a chance to mention his lack of height. Clearly still a member of the refs' union.

Gallagher twice suspended by the PL for incompetence. Not worth listening to.

Your comment about the Strujik incident highlights just how difficult the referees job is... and that's before blue-tinted glasses are on.

I always judge decisions on how I would feel if it was given against us, personally I didn't think it was a foul on Maeda, and if it was it was outside the box. If it was given against us I would be miffed.

Secondly, of all the cast on the pitch, the referee is the only who isn't prepared to cheat. Every player is trying to gain every advantage they can, making the refs job near impossible.

Hmmm, Jay's not my type. Give me a Jobi McAnuff or a Marcus Harness any day, though. 😁

That also shows another limitation/confusion of VAR. I think the right outcome was foul plus yellow card, but im not sure if that outcome is possible with VaR.

If it gets waved away post check, then that could mean similar tackles have to be reffed in the same way - I.e. incorrectly again.

So in some ways the red might have been given because it was "less bad" to make too much than too little of it?

Presumably it is perfectly reasonable for the referee to look at it on VAR review and say "Oh, OK, I got that wrong it should have been a free kick and a yellow card but it isn't a red. It was an error but I can't correct it now so let's play on as in the good old days when refs got things wrong and it was left to washed up ex-players to argue over later that evening."

In fact, if he said that over the Tannoy, only the most die-hard fan could fail to applaud it!

"Bloke is a joke"

Bloke backs his referee colleagues Every. Single. Time.
Really is no point in having him on 'Refwatch' what-so-ever.
