| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 08:47 - Oct 15 with 2622 views | BlueMoon | That makes sense. GON has suggested he will be adaptable. If not this game then I don't know which. Of course it's nice to 'have a go' but goal difference is a thing and there's no fun in getting tonked 5-0. Self preservation and have a proper go at Forest a week on Friday. | | | |
| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 08:55 - Oct 15 with 2572 views | WolfieAtTheBack | Would he have one eye on Forest at home next Friday maybe. Think we have a decent chance of getting a result against Forest with the starting team, fully fit plus Fatawu will be ready to go by then who adds a lot of pace and balance to the team. | | | |

| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 09:26 - Oct 15 with 2441 views | StockholmBlue | A 4-2-3-1 is essentially a 4-5-1 in defence, which is quite a defensive formation. Plying Man City away means we naturally will fall back in our blocks for long periods of the game. I don´t think it is the formation in it self that he will alter with, maybe more if, when and how to press them. I don´t think we will go all the way up to press very often, but more sit back by the halfway line and then try to stear them where we can allow them and be aggessive from a compact formation. It is also about personnel, for instance I think Maeda will play on one of the flanks because of his legs and hard work. | |

More likely to go 3 at the back I would think. Ouattara & Davis make for excellent wingbacks, while arguably a back 3 of O'Shea, Diop & Greaves would suit all of them. It may still come to having to effectively play one of our #10's as a 3rd midfielder when out of possession, but really I'd expect us to start as a 5--2-2-1 (or 3-4-2-1 with the ball) for this one.

| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 09:51 - Oct 15 with 2352 views | rickw | When we've stuck to our guns and played one of the "big" teams we've come up short, so would change and bring Palacios back in and move Enciso to a wing - play 433 and setup to counter attack with pace - I guess Enciso on the left, Fatawu on the right and Emersonn up front. With Ouattara and Davis we are also well setup to play with wing backs, so I can understand that too. | |

| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 10:01 - Oct 15 with 2310 views | Guthrum | I can't see why we would, for one game, completely alter our mode of playing, break up all the relationships growing among the usual starting lineup and have to build new ones in just a week, bring in players who are not up to match speed, remove much of the attacking joyfulness we have seen and parade our inferiority. The result is likely to be a "cup-type", slightly disjointed performance in which lack of connections, rusty players and being on the back foot sees us go down limply to defeat. Fair enough if O'Neil has a specific plan he thinks will get a favourable result against ManC. But as just a general change of style, I would not be in favour. Like Metal Hacker said, better to go down in a fighting 4-3 than a dismal 4-0. Think of the spirit we showed despite the blows at Old Trafford, in frustrating Liverpool after the early shock - and how much momentum that carried to games afterwards. | |

The suggestion that the 4-2-3-1 falls back to 4-5-1 for most, if not all, of this upcoming game has me thinking that who is in the starting eleven is the most important factor, no Philogene or Clarke for example if we want a couple of players mainly doing defensive work. Not even sure how suitable Maeda is for that role either. Greaves at left back with Davis in an advanced left midfield position as our outlet, our few minutes of respite on that flank ?

More than Maeda - whose harrying energy could be very useful - I would worry about Fatawu getting frustrated and picking up cards. Might be more inclined to play the ankle-biters, Clarke and Maeda, left and right, leaving Davis' pace to intecept wide players who break through. Enciso, equally tenacious, in the middle behind either Emersonn or Flemming. Palacios and Lukic backed by O'Shea and Diop as the central blocking formation, with Ouattara at RB. Not changing the setup particularly, while having most of our strongest lineup on the pitch and retaining the tools to break fast and shoot when we get the chance.

| Three in midfield on Saturday? on 12:23 - Oct 15 with 1895 views | ThatMuhrenCross | I'd go 5-3-2 with two big men up top and just settle for physical, direct football. Won't be pretty, but it's our only chance: Walton Ouatarra / O'Shea / Diop / Greaves / Davis Florentino / Palacios / Lukic Emersonn / Flemming Not a game for Enciso to be starting in my opinion. Too much of a luxury. | |

Enciso is a pretty tireless worker, even been noted by GO a few times how good that part of his game is so I don't have him down as a luxury player at all. Unless he is injured Enciso should not be dropped for any game. In all games but especially in ones like this you need players who can pull out something magic and sneak you a goal out of nowhere.

Enciso is no luxury hard working who puts a shift in for the team. If I had a criticism it would be at times he does to much and should release the balla bit quicker.

Totally agree and while I know lots of people have a dim view of Philogene his out of possession work is probably better than Clarke (although he is improving here). I'd probably have Maeda, Enciso and Philogene as the three behind the striker as their OOP playing is the best in those positions.

Yep was perfect. Even in what wasn't his best game overall he still has a moment where he delivers something nobody in our team can.

Other way of looking at is that it's useful to have the low block-counter attack as a string to your bow and, generally speaking, normal teams that go to the Etihad and get a result have had to get compact, defend their penalty area and score on the break. We had this plenty of times in the second and third tiers when the shoe was on the other foot - we *loved* it when teams came to Portman Road to go for it and give us a game, hated it when they came to defend deep, make fouls and waste time. Why give the home team what they want? [Post edited 15 Oct 16:14]
