| Walton not good enough 15:45 - Oct 17 with 10880 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | You need your keeper to be having a worldie at the Ethiad to have any chance, but for all that hard work we are putting in as outfield players and managed to get back into game. Both looked savable but Jesus that second, not good. | |

| Walton not good enough on 12:24 - Oct 18 by FrimleyBlue | Ok then ill stick to clamour if youre looking to be pedantic about it. And no its not about convenience its simply not bothering to gather evidence when the you know full well its true and just playing games. Youve just accepted youre aware of people asking for walton over scherpen. Earlier you werent aware of such a thing. And btw. Your love of hirst you say you didnt have. You asked the forum if wed have been better off without his £7 mill Transfer. Regardless of your premature thoughts of emmersonn surelt you dont suggest missing out on 7 mill if you dont feel said player is good enough to stay. [Post edited 18 Oct 12:34]

Ok, well there's one bit of evidence you don't have to trawl back far to find - show me the bit where I wasn't aware of anyone calling for Walton to come in... It's not "pedantic". There's a huge difference between one more than zero and "a clamour". "when the you know full well its true and just playing games." Again. More nonsense. I'm not playing games. There is no evidence that the same people sticking up for Walton in this thread are also Hirst lovers. You won't check because it's impossible to check. You're making stuff up. Re your swift edit: Again, your brain just leaps to extremes. Questioning whether it was worth hanging onto Hirst given the other second choice option at the time was Akpom, DOESN'T MEAN I LOVE HIRST. Fecking hell.

| Walton not good enough on 12:43 - Oct 18 with 1018 views | Churchman | I think Walton is fine. He’s big, has a bit about him. He has made some good stops this year and the odd occasion where he might have done better. Same with every keeper really. He is ok at commanding his area and has a bit of presence about him. Is he the best keeper I’ve ever seen? No. The worst. Definitely not. But the key is the other players. I sense they are comfortable with him. | | | |

That was finished. Ive kept my thoughts today in this thread discussing things with flash after he named dropped me. Ive not gone into endless threads like the past and posted these thoughts in them. Infact ive done the opposite. Started one about diop. The potential of the next 4 games and popped into the thread about norwich. So what exactky have i done wrong? My emotions are fine. There is no defining number to meet your clamour requirement. After most goals scherpen conceded there were many posts bemoaning his efforts and thus started the walton wish. That for me is a clamour. And yeah it kinda does. Just because you may deem one not good enough doesnt mean the other is unless you rate them yourself. Otherwise youd have said take the 7 and sell akpom and brought in another. But anyways. People getting bored of this back and forth and i of course are the one causing it not you for name dropping me. | Walton not good enough on 12:52 - Oct 18 with 979 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Wow this got a lot of downvotes. I thought we were really good yesterday. I feared the worst going there but thought we showed an unreal amount of character to stay in that game and at times I thought actually looked the better side for decent periods. As for Walton I would definitely like him saving that 2nd one, I thought he got close enough to it, I expect if you asked Walton himself he would say the same thing. I am shocked at how many people think that Walton being our number 1 was the plan. Scherpen was clearly the plan but he wasn't playing well so we went with the more known quantity in Walton. What O'Neil said was purely protecting Scherpen, he isn't going to come out and say he was playing crap so I dropped him, I think that's fairly obvious no ? Walton is a decent keeper. I think he has looked better than Scherpen did but I equally dont think he is a Premier League number 1 that is why the club have consistently tried to replace him, they just haven't managed to find that right replacement. Not Waltons fault and as long as he's playing he has my support but would he get a game for any other Prem side ? I suspect not.

| Walton not good enough on 12:53 - Oct 18 with 978 views | HighgateBlue | Personally I think that all these things can be true at once, and they represent my view: (i) Walton did OK against Man City. Some really good moments, some less ideal ones; (ii) He was not the reason we lost, although if we had a world class keeper we may have kept one of the goals out and managed a draw; (iii) He was a part of a team that overall put in a creditable performance and got a result that most of us would have been at least OK with, before the match; (iv) He has been at least OK when he's played this season; (v) We have only achieved a really strong league position in the Prem when we've had a properly top keeper in Premier League terms (vi) Walton is not a properly top keeper in Premier League terms; (vii) We have spent a lot of money over the last 3 years; (viii) We have bought several keepers, including from overseas; (ix) We have spent fees of over £10m on outfield players who ended up missing out on the first XI, and indeed sometimes missing out on the bench; (x) We do not seem to have prioritised GK as a position for spending, in the same way; (xi) We have taken risks on keepers (Muric, Scherpen) rather than buying certainty. Those risks have not (at present) paid off; (xii) We have binned off our most talented keeper in Muric, in part surely because of the abuse he was getting from some of the fanbase for making some serious clangers, even though he conceded fewer goals and made more saves than our other keepers; (xiii) A first choice keeper is a player who plays more league minutes than pretty much any other player; (xiv) a team which is a favourite for relegation will concede a lot of shots on goal; (xv) having a strong goalkeeper is really really important and should be a priority in my view; (xvi) Scherpen has clearly disappointed to some extent, despite the diplomatic noises that have been made; (xvii) The GK question should at least be considered in January, unless Walton absolutely aces the next couple of months. If we do not have the headroom on funds, and the right option is not available, then we should not panic buy; (xviii) I don't know what recall options there are in the KVO loan deal with Valencia. I was impressed by him. However, I don't think we should assume that he is the saviour for the present rather than the future. The loan deal doesn't appear to have been a big success for him or for us. In more direct response to the OP: it's unfair to conclude that a player is not good enough, in absolute terms, based on one performance. That is all the more the case when the performance was in my view fairly average. Also, "good enough" for what? He's not good enough to single handedly turn us into a team that can do what no other PL team has done this season and get a point against Man City, let alone away. None of our players are "good enough" to do that. Is he good enough to play in the Prem? Yes. Is he good enough to put in reasonable performances in the Prem? Yes. Is he good enough not to be our worst player in most matches in which he plays? Yes. Is he good enough to be our first choice given the resources at our disposal? The answer in the summer, for me, was 'no'. But we are where we are, and I don't think there are many fans who think that Scherpen's performances were stronger than Walton's this season. On the TWTD ratings, Scherpen is about 0.75 below Walton per match, and has the same average as Charlie Compton. So for now, I think we need to be nice to Walton. It's not his fault that we haven't successfully recruited a keeper specifically for the top flight /at any time in the last half century/. | | | |

Show me the bit where I wasn't aware of anyone calling for Walton to come in. You've swerved that bit, interestingly. I remember one, maybe two people calling for Walton to replace Sherpen. I remember most people being shocked that O'Neil did it. That certainly isn't fans clamouring for it, by any definition. Again, rating Hirst above Akpom doesn't mean I LOVE him, or particularly want to keep him even. I've not professed any love for Walton either, which is the reason you brought in the weird Hirst angle. You exaggerate, and that does any points you have a disservice.

Why would I care about TWTD downvotes? I put a thread about Emersonn’s hold up play yesterday and got loads of upvotes because it was perceived as a positive post. That’s usually how it goes. I don’t think Walton is a PL level keeper and I don’t think he done well for the goals yesterday, it’s nothing personal, just an opinion. In terms of his overall ability at the level I’d argue the opinion is clearly shared by McKenna, GON and the scouts. I’ve mentioned he’s been a great servant for the club and I loved what he done for us down the leagues. If others have a different opinion about his PL readiness, that’s fine. Not sure if you’re suggesting I should stop replying because people disagree? That’s weird. [Post edited 18 Oct 15:25]

To keep claiming the club agree with you is hilarious. In a close season when the George Hirsts, Harry Clarkes and Elkan Baggotts that weren't going to be used in the Premiership were cleared out, Walton was given a new deal, even as keepers were signed to compete. You're very obviously welcome to your opinion, however weird it is, but Gary O'Neil does not share it.
| Walton not good enough on 18:50 - Oct 18 with 660 views | jas0999 | Walton is decent and had a decent game yesterday. Agree he could have done better on one of the goals. But also pulled off some saves. My view remains, we need better and find it odd we signed two other keepers on the summer but Walton remains number one. All that said, that Haaland is some player and gets power and accuracy on all shots and headers. The disallowed goal … what power! | | | |

Indeed, with the plan seemingly all along to loan Kane out, it’s clear one Walton or Palmer would be staying as back up. Unfortunately Palmer also had a knock so couldn’t leave the club so he’s still here as well. I think after winning the number 1 shirt last year and having a decent season the plan was always to have Walts as the back up. The extension didn’t happen in the summer. [Post edited 18 Oct 19:18]

It doesn't matter when he got it, the point is he got it. If he was just somehow the last resort after Scherpen didn't turn out to be what O'Neil thought he was, we still didn't need to give him a new contract. Unless O'Neil rates him as Premiership standard. Which he does.

Of course it is allowed, it's just that some people have different opinions, including presumably O'Neil as things currently stand. Indeed, we are where we are, and it seems to me impossible that we would buy another goalkeeper in the January window given all we spent in the summer on two goalkeepers, so we have to make the best of what we have, and I am content to leave it to O'Neil's judgment. Indeed, just because Walton has the jersey now doesn't mean he has it for the season. [Post edited 18 Oct 20:06]

Not by design, the Scherpen situation has clearly gone wrong, many on here have gone very blue tinted with the GK situation and yesterday’s performance between the sticks. Let’s hope CW proves me massively wrong, I’ll be delighted if he does, as I really see it as our only major problem area, which is exciting. [Post edited 18 Oct 20:06]

I didn't say you should care about downvotes, just that they might be an indication, when you get THAT many, of something you're saying not quite being right. I know you don't think Walton is a PL keeper. You've said it about 75 times across 6 pages. GON doesn't agree with you, else he wouldn't have retained him and be playing him there. No, I've not remotely suggested you should stop replying. I've suggested the narrative that people think Walton's alright purely because of nostalgia is boring, rather rude, and in your head. There's no evidence for it. [Post edited 18 Oct 21:15]

And morsy should have played more and then re signed after he left that club abroad, wes should have been kept over mcateer, And no i cant be bothered to find those posts but surely you remember those. But also based on the op and the down arrows and the opta rating for walton mentioned earlier, is the op correct and the down arrows were wrong? So far hes had two under 5 ratings and at 6.7. Is that prem standard?
