Yep - wasn't particularly well hit and it was the lack of pace if anything that caused the mistake.

| Rushworth on 07:08 - Oct 20 by The_Flashing_Smile | Haha, you know your argument's failing when you're bringing in the cost of the data to bolster it! What about the cost of goalkeeping gloves, that should boost your numbers a bit more! |
Yes. The data gurus who led us to playing our keeper from League 1 must surely be worth every penny. That’s not a slight on Walton, either, he deserves his chance. But let’s not pretend the deal with goalkeeper.com has been anything other than a failure.

| Rushworth on 11:30 - Oct 20 by longtimefan | Think that's a bit unfair on Walton now. I'd have agreed at the start of last season where I'd have kittens every time he had the ball at his feet. He improved that aspect of his play dramatically over the season. I don't think that's a problem now - certainly better than Palmer. I don't think we've really seen enough of Scherpen to fully judge him yet. |
He can kick the ball forwards and to the touch lines in general but he cannot pick a pass like the top level GK's can and develop play, he is not a progressive modern day goalie, he is however a solid shot stopper to add balance. Walton is fine for this season, remember he has some really solid players in front of him to take the load off which will help. Next season I would like to see a top level goalkeeper for when we are in Europe, too soon. [Post edited 20 Oct 12:18]

Not really, no. The discussion was about how much our keepers cost v Rushworth. You got your maths wrong, then tried to add in the cost of data analytics. There was no discusion about how good those analytics were.

We did the same thing last time we were up, let's be honest, because you have to when you go from League One (League Two in Coventry's case) and have to try and secure the best players you can from a small pool of players willing to join. The Ogbene transfer may turn out to be our very worst, and he's still technically on our books having played what, 6 games?

| Rushworth on 14:50 - Oct 20 with 953 views | OldFart71 | Paul Cooper cost us £23,000 and had a record of saving 29% of the penalties. In season 1979-80 he saved 8 out of 10 penalties he faced. I suggest that it's as much luck as it is skill plucking a goalkeepper out that season after season does the majority of things needed for that position. Statistics of previous form mean very little. Some clubs are either brilliant at picking keepers or just plain lucky as with Stoke City who had Gordon Banks and then Peter Shilton. Even some of the best made errors such as both Peter Bonetti and David Seaman when playing for England. When Bobby Robson was Town Manager it was said he tried to sign Pat Jennings from Tottenham. | | | |

Also incorrect. Maths or Math are both acceptable as a shortened way of writing Mathematics, so while saying Maths as a plural for Math is wrong (there is no plural), using Maths or Math is fine, and in the UK historically Maths has been the more common shortened form.

"overstated" lol. We also got back pretty much what we paid for Muric so not sure how that fits your overpaid narrative either.

10million for a player who made 19 appearances doesn’t seem great business even if we did supposedly recoup a good chunk of money for him.

If we’ve subsequently sold him for a good chunk of our money back though, it isn’t a 10m loss really is it. It’s 10m minus what we sold for.

If we’d sold Richard Wright for the - widely reported - 6million feethat would have been a great deal. Alas it was only 2million.

Muric was a flop, but we limited the damage reasonably well with the fee we got back for him. Scherpen has time on his side and I'm not writing him off yet. Van Oevelen was cheap, and he's young. He looked sharp in pre season, he could be one to break through. Walton is just a steddy Eddy, solid and dependable but probably doesn't get in many (any) other sides at this level. He's a perfect #2 keeper IMO, a good influence and professional, a good age and capable of 'doing a job'. I expect we would strengthen in the summer if we stay up, especially if Scherpen goes the season without nailing down the jersey. We've tried the past 2 PL seasons, next time it wouldn't surprise me if we go for someone with a bit more PL experience. Muric had a bit, but it wasn't a great advert for him.

Talk about digging yourself a hole, get your figures right first if you want to talk about if we've overspent or got value. Clearly getting back basically what we spent after a not great season isn't a mass overspend. You can just admit you're wrong you know?

Muric has proven he's a decent keeper. We very nearly/possibly did break even with him when you factor in the loan fee so it wasn't terrible business. Just didn't work as planned. Keepers need a bit of time and think we need to just do that with Kjell. Van Oevelen looks really good as well. Hopefully he can get in the Valencia team or get another loan somewhere as best distribution I've seen from a keeper. We have a good keeping unit for the money we have spent. We don't have the stand out world class one but it's a decent keeping unit.

I think in the summer they will keep the Dutch prospect to loan about more, sell or release the rest and recruit a long term keeper as main priority in the summer. As you say, they are all quite similar with the exception of the player on loan in Spain who is untested.
