Cooper, Wright, Walton 09:06 - Oct 24 with 689 viewsBeachBlue

My three all-time favourite Ipswich goalkeepers.

I was born in the early seventies, to give you some context

Poll: Who do you think will be this season's surprise success story?

It’s heresy, but I never rated Cooper at the time and don’t now. Better between the sticks than most we’ve had there, obviously, but I always felt we were a top level keeper away from winning a lot of trophies. Predecessor David Best gets there nod from me. Roy Bailey was before my time so I’d be interested in any views on him.

Richard Wright is a standout. We paid dearly when he left. The other one that leaps to mind was Bartosz Bialkowski.

Mike Pollitt emergency loan from Wigan. Only played for us once a 3-1 win over Norwich. Made several crucial saves a legendary performance

Have to agree about David Best, solid keeper but one of my favourites was little Laurie Sivell, fearless agility personified!... nb.Had Sir Bob got Pat Jennings as he wanted we'd probably have won the League at least twice and who knows what after that judging by English European Cup winners of the time

Craig Forrest and Richard Wright for me. It's no coincidence that we had successful periods with both of them between the sticks.

But also a shout out for Kelvin Davis, who I thought was a terrific 'keeper.

Never saw the fuss about Wright myself.

Best town keeper I’ve ever seen was Asmir Begović

Bart was very good, the best loanee we had was Begovic who went on to decent things

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I’d agree with that all day long. RW stood out for me but then ruined it by moving to big time only to bench warm and miss out on England caps. He cost us as Italian replacement was one of our downfalls. Bart was good too but it wasn’t best time for us!
Cooper was good too but I have reservations on Walton. Good shot stopper but could do better with distribution. If we stay in Prem then I’d look for better

Where does the orthodoxy come from that replacing Cooper with Pat Jennings would have led to more trophies? Does Cooper bear particular responsibility for the fall-off in results in Spring 1981, or the slow start to 1979/80 or the poor February of 1982?

For the sake of three extra away draws in 1974/75, Laurie Sivell would have a First Division winners medal.

Good shouts, both those.

Just think having a Jennings behind Beattie/Hunter and Butcher/Osman is a pretty formidable combination.... As you suggest we didnt need to turn that many results over for quite a few years to be more successful. It can only be a personal observation but i do think it may have made that little bit of difference . Paul Cooper as a back up to PJ would have been fantastic but that would have left my favourite Little Laurie out in the cold so now im talking myself out of the idea!!

In games of fine margins, a better keeper like Jennings would have made a difference. See Brian Cough at Forest signing Shilton. He wasn’t wrong. Nor was Robson going after PJ.

We came close in 76/77 but after smashing Arsenal away 4-1 (I was there - what a performance), we started losing too many plus the odd draw. Would a better keeper in 80/81 have got us over the line? It’s all opinions but I believe yes.

81/82? I doubt it would have made a difference. We actually finished the season quite strongly. Liverpool were just better than us. 79/80 - the team was building. A better keeper would have probably given us more points, but 3rd place was as high as we were going to get that season.

Good keeper. Lived next door to my brother in B.S.E.
One keeper not mentioned is the late Martin Fulop, R.I.P, rated him highly.
Begovic only played 6 times for us on loan, but you could see the quality. Was always going to play top level.

Indeed, if Pat Jennings had joined Town instead of Arsenal in 1977 (the deal was nearly done but fell down over a signing on fee) I think Town would have won more trophies.
