Set Pieces. Attacking and Defending. 16:02 - Oct 25 with 880 viewsTRUE_BLUE123

Been a brilliant start to the season. So much we are doing well.

Also lots to improve on and Set pieces are one of those things for me. I haven't checked the numbers but I have to say that I don't think we ever look particularly threatening from attacking set pieces. The one we did score this season vs Fulham was such a good one as well and clearly one that was worked on. Need some more of those please.

Attacking set pieces have been poor for ages. In the last two games alone, Davis and Encisco have ballooned free kicks miles over and I really have no genuine sense of anticipation whenever we have an attacking set piece.
In an earlier post today I expressed my concern at the amount of aerial balls we lost out on against Forest in our box (many from set pieces). That's a concern

Need to address this for next week.

Hulls main threat will be counter attacking and catching us in the break and set pieces. We cannot afford to give them an easy set piece goal.

At the moment its the one thing O'neil hasnt improved on since his last prem spells. I say that but have we conceded that many goals tho? Or is it more simply we are doing ok defensively overall at set pieces but poor attacking them

It's a big part of the game these days.

Data (after 7 games) suggests we're not generating many chances but not giving up many.

Attacking.
Scored 1 - the same as 6 other teams. Four teams have yet to score one.
Shots from Set Pieces - 19th.
xG from Set Pieces - 19th.

Defending:
Goals conceded - 2 - pretty middle of the pack
Shots conceded - 5th fewest
xG conceded - 3rd lowest

Poll: What % of our full potential are we currently playing at?

Better data on defending than I expected tbh. Does feel like we allow a few too many free headers but I may be wrong.

Offensive numbers need to approve. We are already a good team going forward. Add set pieces to the mix would be ideal.

Ive beem suprised by out set pieces for a good 18 months now

We have oshea and as the fulham goal showed. Hes worth getting the ball too

Yet under KM and most of the time now we still do this floaty corner to back post routine.

Id always thought whip it in 6 yard box and attack it.

Floaty corners indeed. Just not dangerous enough. Keepers and defenders love rhem. Also, I think the lack of movement is an issue too.

That’s interesting, I thought Forest had two very good chances from first contract Friday. Guess the Everton disallowed one also isn’t factored in, that was quite poor.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Tbf last season we won first contact so many times and then failed to control that contact.

Maybe Garbutt, thought his corners and free kicks were pretty good.

Lots of teams seem to do it and if the blockers do their job then the player at the back post usually seems to head it back into the danger area. I think the idea must be that it's far more difficult to mark players in the second phase so if you put it back in the danger area then you increase your chance of getting something rather than just going for it.

Would like to see us try a bit more variety e.g the ball out to the edge of the box for Leif to hit like he did at Oxford away

Yes that was a good one but rarely have we threatened to score. Need new ideas like playing out wide or laying off to create different angles. Defence/ keeper are ready for most shots so need to catch them out!

Corners in football these days are utterly shite. And not just ours. Everyone does the exact same corner. Generally with no one running in the box just pushing a shoving. I’m sure some analytics people have just worked out what is optimal and it goes against what you would historically think of as effective. But my god it is dull and uninspiring
