When did 'Cov' become a thing?
I know we haven't been in the same league as them that often in recent years, so maybe I missed it developing in general conversation, but having watched football for nearly 50 years, there didn't really seem to be a need to shorten Coventry to just one syllable for most people until last season. I had thought it was just one of Benjamin Bloom's irksome foibles.

Cov, innit.

I’ve lived close to Hinckley for close to 30 years now. It’s is pretty much the midpoint between Leicester and Coventry and it’s been referred to as ‘Cov’ here for as long as I have been around.

It really irritated me at first, but I don’t really notice it anymore.

As a 1999 graduate of Cov Uni, I can confirm it's been around for a while!

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I have the misfortune to live quite near Coventry and can confirm it is how they are referred to in the main. Maybe because there are too many syllables for many of the fans in the full pronunciation. What I find strange is that "Cov" fans seem to think we are somehow like a new rival. I think this stems from the fact they don't have a big rivalry with anyone (though they think they have with Leicester but that is new to most Leicester fans who generally despise Derby and Forest).

I'm just down the road from you, close to Tamworth. I've been here for a similar amount of time to you. I can confirm it's always been called Cov by the locals here.

I think it's just a midland thingy. Hence, Brum. There are other towns and villages local to me that seem to have had there names shortened by the natives too.

I have a mate who is a Leicester fan and Cov are their main rival. He hates them more than any other team

I suppose I'm thinking more in terms of the football club, in the media & nationally.
I guess social media has had a major influence in making everything & everywhere seem more local.

We refer to ourselves as Town, and we know what we mean but say you follow Town to 99% of other football fans and they haven't an idea who "Town" is.

There really is only one significant Town in football.

We must give Huddersfield a nod, since they have a rich and successful history, but Mansfield, Luton, Shrewsbury, Swindon and Crawley are mere pretenders and should be dismissed.

As for Wrexham, they can get to fwck, calling themselves The Town. It's not in the club name and Wrexham is, for some reason probably involving not wanting to upset the nationalists, a city.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Not too far away from Coventry either and you do hear just 'Cov" here quite a bit. Also, but to a lesser extent, hear "Leam" for Leamington Spa sometimes.

It partly stems for them feeling like they were being overlooked because they weren't the parachute side

They were desperate for some praise because they had a decent season. I didn't here them complaining when all the pound shop pundits were predicting they would do alright simply because Lampard was their manager

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I’ve no problem with Coventry fans enjoying any success they’ve had. After the problems with SISU, playing home games at Northampton and then in front of one stand for their supporters at Birmingham, they’ve gone through the mill in the 2010s and can call themselves whatever they want, I’d say.
