A leaky defence does not make for comfortable survival! We really need to get a couple of clean sheets, for the confidence of the defence.

Now he's being exposed and not just today. He's been at fault for bad basic decision making in practically every game this season. [Post edited 1 Nov 5:00]

But was he? He was liked enough to be thought of by many that sang happily enough that McKenna knew exactly what we need, and stated that was Woolfy at the back...

It's the amount we're conceding though Joe. We're currently tracking for 76 goals against for the season. Going back through the last 10 prem seasons I can only see one team that has managed to survive letting in that many goals, which was Leeds in 21/22. The odds will not be in our favour if we carry on conceding at this rate. I raised the OP as it's a concerning habit. GON might say it's his plan to outscore the opposition by playing open forward thinking football, but it's a dangerous game. Personally, I think it's silly not to be slightest bit concerned, even if just a niggling concern, as I have.

We are on track to score 60 goals though, I can’t imagine many teams have gone down having done that thought The whole picture has to be looked at for me

You're acting like being better defensively means playing a more defensive style and therefore scoring less. That's not the case. The two goals we conceded have nothing to do with us being attacking and trying to outscore teams. We can play the same style and try to outscore the other teams and still be harder to score against. There is a good chance that we may have injuries or a loss of form to key players later in the season. Trying to outscore teams when conceding an average of two goals a game throughout the season will be extremely tough as the season progresses. [Post edited 2 Nov 21:20]

But that's just not true, whilst O'Shea didn't cover himself in glory the wide open space comes from Davis playing high, Diop pressing very aggressively on half way and Palacios being ahead of Iroegbunum in a half space - that aggressive style of defending is what has allowed us to have the 2nd most shots from high turnovers and most goals in the league from that scenario Even for the second goal we get caught with men ahead of the ball when we give it away because we are looking to go when we get the chance to break, it's a risky game but is the one O'Neil has elected to go with It really isn't as simple as just trying to 'tighten up', every change to do that has an effect going the other way up the pitch - it's all about balance, if we could just concede less goals whilst still offering the same threat we obviously would do.

Part of the picture is that at times Town’s defence and midfield are able to be robust against some pretty serious attacking waves. I’ve actually been quite impressed with our shape at times, and especially at set pieces (not all). It’s individual errors for me and mistakes up field we need to eradicate. Yes Daragh loses his head, but it was also mistakes up field and him crossing over positions with Diop. Florentino should never give that foul away for their second, stupid. Palace have conceded more. But we need to get the goals against down. I think Lukic returning may help. And maybe starting Maeda. Nunez slip, Maguire handball, Barry ridiculous deflection. It’s the goals like those later at Old Trafford, where we lost our heads and shape we need to eradicate. As you say Joe, goals this campaign are not the issue, and we will concede as we’re an attacking side - just a tweak or two needed. [Post edited 3 Nov 12:16]

| We've had a great, solid start to this campaign... on 17:40 - Nov 1 by FrimleyBlue | The answer is simple The minute davis is halfway we have to pull a cm back into a dm role to cover the counter Having davis. JP and Palacios as well as diop inside hulls half was just suicide. Eso as they had the ball! |
I don’t think it was that simple. Davis the left back was marking Belloumi (Hulls right sided attacker). He hadn’t bombed forward, was tight to probably Hulls biggest threat. In all likelihood under instructions from O’Neil. Diop who was playing left centre back at Hull (first time this season) had gone with McBurnie into Hulls half. The scorer and run came from the defensive midfielder, it needed a midfielder to go with him, once that didn’t happen, O’Shea had to come across, even if it was only 5 to 10 yards. He shouldn’t need a call to make that judgement, but he would have been aware he was the right sided centre half and didn’t want to expose the complete penalty area. He made the wrong decision, but can see why he didn’t go instinctively. The man to man marking may have been something Hull had noticed at half time, and the introduction of Crooks into midfield, meant they had an extra body in there. Allowing a run from midfield to be unmarked. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Think that is harsh on Davis, who had followed Belloumi.

We do look shaky at the back and I definitely don't think the CB's are that great for the PL, but they're not the worst. We do sometimes seem very exposed. I'm not sure what people's opinions on Florentino are, but the few times I've seen him, he seems to give the ball away a bit too much for me. I'm guessing Lukic comes back in when he's fit?
