Hull are the worst side I’ve seen so far this season 14:04 - Nov 1 with 2222 viewsMullet

I don’t mean that in a sour grapes way, we gifted them everything yesterday and had an officiating team so far behind play they were looking to give Dean Windass advantages. But we should have buried them anyway.

What they did well was sit tight and narrow and pick their moment. They look very much like we did in terms of quality last time around and I think it might be a timing thing that sees them stay up - Man City punishment and a few clubs circling the drain at once all do them massive favours. M

There were plenty of moments that showed our superiority for me. Compare iroegabunam being shrugged away by Emersonn as the Brazilian broke vs when he went through on his goal and no one simply closed him.

I think beyond bad refereeing etc it’s those poor decisions that kill is in games like that. The tactical switch at half time completely shut us down in midfield and he did use Fatawu et al to push down the wings and beat a man. Keeping them worried about breaking on them would have stifled them in my mind.

Felt like we simply gave them too much respect and didn’t work for each other at times. No one called man on for Florentino in the build up to their goal and he makes a soft pass - but even that mistake should have been covered with the time and space left. For all the good things and good players we have it felt like we have a bit of “gelling” still to do.

They’re a slightly faster, more technically gifted version of the Accrington Stanley side we toiled against in L1.

Lump it up the park, chase it, look for free kicks, corners and throws and then chuck it in the box. It will get found out soon enough at PL level. If we had got the 2nd when we were passing it round them like parking cones in the first half we would won easily.

Don’t disagree about Hull as a side, but to their credit they’ve done it for 1.25 seasons now, it’s too big a sample to be a side that are lucky. People said all of last season about them outperforming their underlying metrics, but they get the 1 that matters. They’ve beaten United & Cov, taken points off Chelsea, Villa, Brentford. They don’t pop the ball around at the back in a way that’s been so in vogue and apparently easy on the eye, but they play to their strengths, recognise their limitations without any ego, and find a way.

I admire them, they’re not going to outplay teams at this level but they recognise where they’re at and optimise for points. A breath of fresh air really vs the likes of Southampton under Martin, who seemed to have all the ego of a top side without the ability.

Were we not in the division with them I’d be wanting them to keep it up tbh. Given we are I hope they run out of steam, and if they have a few injuries and a poor run of form over winter I think they have the potential to slide pretty quickly which would be helpful.

We have to look at ourselves first re. yesterday. After such a good away performance in that 1st half we bent over for them after the break. The goals were both poor, but the period before them saw far, far too many errors which shifted the momentum. Our inability to look after the ball in tight areas, particularity Florentino who at times was a big issue for me, as it was against Forest. Palacios is a class act, it’s a shame there’s only 1 of him. It’s not easy to do, but managing those momentum swings is important and and area we need to do better. Leeds are interesting to watch, pretty much any time the opponent gets their tales remotely up they find a way to kill it. Sensible fouls, the dark arts, taking their time over restarts etc. I’ve seen them a few times this season and they’re remarkably well versed at it.

The way they treated us like prime Barcelona for the first 35 minutes was quite bizarre. Yet for first 20 mins of second half they looked way more threatening than us. Clown show goals aside, our general lack of control against the weakest team in the league was a big red flag.

Good points re the dark arts: we needed O’Shea to go to ground early when having his shirt and arm pulled; force the ref to see it and make a decision.

Said the same to my friend, he’s far too honest trying to compete for that ball. Once there’s that amount of shirt pull just go to ground as it’s coming into the box, put it in the ref / VAR’s head that it’s impeded him from attacking the ball, rather than it looking like it’s a shirt pull but ultimately not stopped his run.

First half Hull were surprisingly poor and we should have taken more advantage but didn't.

Second half they were much better than the first which should have been no surprise. They were never going to settle for carrying on the same and are clearly a decent side. They will be shocked at how poor our defending was for the two goals just as it surprised us how poor they were altogether for the first half.

Overall, we should have won and shot ourselves in the foot to fail to do so. But a point there is not a bad result.

I think the defence apart from the odd brain fart are pretty nailed on now, the problem areas I think are central midfield where we need Lukic back asap, left wing and up top where I don't get the continued favouritism for Emersonn. I'd have Maeda and Flemming in for Bournemouth which is probably our best team, let Clarke wreak some havoc in the second half.

There’s a reason we were joint favorites to win a PL away game though. False position, he’s working miracles with that points return, gutted to throw 2 points away.

Hull have been effective so far at picking up points by playing to their strengths. However, this does sometimes happen with promoted teams, especially if they play in a different style from the rest of the division. I reckon they will slowly slide down the table. They are odds-on with the bookies to go down.

IF using the eye test yes first half they were poor.

That said they've taken points off Utd, Chelsea and Villa so far and only lost a game by 1 goal.

I admit I wouldn't want to watch that every week but it works for them, remember they are above us in the league due to having a tighter defence. Let's give them some credit, 1/4 season gone pretty much. Yes they may well go down still as teams will likely do better against them second time around. Most here very pleased with our start so Hull fans must be ecstatic to be where they are.

I think it’s uncharitable to call them lucky, but they have as others have said a mix of being a throwback and a very tight and narrow set of ways to play.

We completely fell into a trap of our own making though, we should have had enough to put them to bed.

Good game though wasn't it? Despite the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the performance.

Tbh - although they lacked the level of quality we've signed this time round, I thought Hull showed a level of fight that had we had it two years ago maybe we'd have made a better fist of staying up? Two points dropped, obvs, but I would have been happy with a point before the game so...

I don't get the superiority complex over Hull tbh. We're both promoted teams, with largely second tier squads punching above our weight at the moment. They play a different game to us, but they do play their game well. Between the first goal, and us being flustered by the decisions, we didn't really look very good for much of the game and I fully expected Hull to win it in the end. We did the right thing scoring early, but we can't be affected by bad decisions the way we are, we lost composure and let Hull get into their game. I thought we'd do better given how we played against a much better Forest side, but we are still limited by a few players who clearly aren't at this level.

We're in a relegation fight, as are they, teams below us are now getting their acts together, and we've got a tough run coming up against Bournemouth, Spurs and Villa. I don't see us picking up a single point in those as things stand, especially as we're far from the finished article ourselves, we shouldn't feel massively superior to Hull or Coventry, and I fear those people who have already had us down as safe might be in for a shock come the end of the month.

It's also looking increasingly unlikely City will get a big punishment so we can forget that one again. We're going to have to fight to stay up.

Sad to say we're very leaky,
We're always going to concede at least one so a lot of pressure to score two to try and get a win,
Our right back very good player was he brought for that position probably but we're missing a decent left centre half and left back,
And that's for a couple of seasons not just now

I don't think its a 'superiority complex'. We've come back as a parachute club, having finished 4 places and 11 points above them last season and doubled them. Most would agree we've recruited better than they have since. The majority of their line up is the same side that took them up.

None of that makes it an easy place to go though, as PR wasn't for a lot of sides in the 1st half of our 2024/25 season, but it's not a massive stretch to think we should be earmarking it as a potential win (as they would no doubt), and be disappointed not to have done considering we were the better team for 75% of the game.

I enjoyed the Dean Windass reference but don't agree on everything.

Hull /may/ have similar quality to what we had last time round, but they have picked a game plan and are executing it well. They have (so far) had considerably more success than we did last time around. So what do we attribute their success to? Their manager being unbelievable? Kieran being terrible? Or just dumb luck? None of those explanations on their own seems quite satisfactory.

I do accept that in the first half Hull were really poor. It's a strange game plan to adopt so strongly in a home game against Ipswich. We are not a team which dominates possession against many PL teams, try as we might. But it has been shown that we have a goal in us. From a number of different sources.

Hull's game plan was odd in that context. If we had been more clinical in the first half, it would've been at least 2-0 at half time, and surely game over, given our fitness, decent enough bench, manager with flexibility in terms of strategy, and Hull's aversion to going forwards except when trying to nick a goal.

(And I'm not really complaining too hard on the finishing front - given the step up in class in the PL, we've been way less guilty of wasting chances than we were last year, or in fact not infrequently under Kieran in general, if I'm allowed to say that.)

So yeah, I thought that Hull were really poor in the first half, and didn't wake up when it became clear that we were bossing the game and not toothless. But it would be wrong to attribute too much weight to the start of a match, even thought that's the state of play with both teams fresh and with their chosen 11 on the pitch. Every minute counts. They didn't revolutionise their approach, but they were much more effective in the second half, and exploited our real weakness - our defence.

We were poor in the second half. We managed to lose the second half 2-1 to that Hull team that had just played so very poorly in the first.

I can't quite work out what's going on with set piece goals this season. Hull have 4. Cov and us have only 1 each. The sample size is very small of course, and only 12 teams have actually scored more than 1. But our xG from set pieces is only 1.4, which is second worst in the division. Not sure how we improve that, other than getting more decisions from refs than we are currently! I don't know quite enough about xG, but maybe we're trying to be too intricate and not getting shots in from set pieces. Or maybe we're shooting when we shouldn't be. Or perhaps both. Whatever it is, it seems to me that set pieces are one of the more controllable areas of the game, and hence probably a leveller, and also something that a team with good training facilities and data can excel at. If it's a leveller, then it's something that newly promoted teams must maximise (as Hull have - they're 3rd for set piece goals). As regards the training facilities and data point, Brighton have scored 7 from set pieces, with Chelsea 2nd on 6, and nobody else scoring more than 4. I feel that our wonderful Place of Work training centre must also become a datalab a la Brighton.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, and Hull seem to be good at winning and converting set pieces. It takes two to tango, and we could have either not given the free kick away, or defended it better.
