Brentford have rejected Leicester's £15m bid for 20-year-old Wales defender Chris Mepham.

Wow. Bonkers. Good player. But I’d have been shocked they’d turn down £5m. Not sure he’s currently better than Egan. A lot of potential valued in that fee.

I note they want £15 million for Watkins too!

It appears their recruitment is exceptionally good!

Mepham was a youth player release as a schoolboy by Chelsea. Brentford were raving about him when we played them last season. Brentford do think all of their players are the best in the world though, They are the complete opposite to Ipswich fans

Ohhh, I think it's quaint how we write off signings before they've joined and that we need a scapegoat or two.

So how do they manage to get fees and offers of this magnitude? When you compare it with the interest that we get in our best players they seem to do a very effective job yet they have not been greatly more successful than us on the.pitch.

Is their recruitment policy entirely responsible? Or does their style of play make their players more attractive to premier league and top championship clubs?

Just shows that if you sign the right type of players it's possible to build a good squad. Ok they may get sold but in meantime they improve results and proceeds can be reinvested.
Hopefully we'll avoid Douglas types who have no future and journeymen will be thing of the past. Recent signings may take a while to bed in but could take Town to better level like Brentford.

It's all down to recruitment. They sign the best young talent from the lower leagues or occasionally players discarded from Prem academies and sell them on after a good season or two. We've had a few players who have fitted that bill ourselves, guys like Cresswell, Mings and Webster, but it was never the cornerstone of Mick's recruiting strategy. Hurst seems to very much be going down a similar route to Brentford, signings from the lower leagues with potential for decent fees who will be worth significantly more if they play well at this level.

There is a Brentford tax on sales, because their recruitment has been good, everyone now thinks its exceptional (and better than it is) so they sell players for inflated fees - fair play to them though.

Ironic though that Mepham came through academy and joined when he was 14, is valued at £15m, but they don't think academy is worth running....

Can't argue with what they have got for some of their players over the last couple of seasons though Joe, whether they have come through their disbanded Academy or they have been bought in cheaply from lower leagues and resold. They're certainly doing something right. To some extent, that's what we are going for here, but keeping our Academy and creating a pathway for our youngsters to the first team. Although, selling a star player a season for a 'hefty' sum also appears a strategy which we are embracing, just wish it was for £15m!!!
