The homeless thread has got me thinking. 19:50 - Jan 31 with 3679 views | Pecker | Could we set up a TWTD charity. We pick a cause for every year and we do fund raising things throughout the year for the designated charity. We could collect on matchdays as well. Could it work?
The homeless thread has got me thinking. on 19:55 - Jan 31 with 3125 views | Coastalblue | Actually that's not a bad idea, except can you imagine the arguments over which charity to support? Might be good for some of the 'wagers' on here if the loser paid into the fund.

The homeless thread has got me thinking. on 19:55 - Jan 31 with 3126 views | monytowbray | Would be nice and would get involved. Although I also find it mega depressing we live in a world where normal people are expected to help with these issues rather than the powers responsible for enabling the mess in the first place. Also find it sad that billionaires who have got where they are by assisting such gulfs in financial well being are then praised for throwing some crumbs off their bread wagon when it would be easier to just not steal everyone’s bread in the first place.

I agree, but unfortunately that isn't going to happen. Anybody on here ever set up a charity before? Do we have to register etc.?

Sounds like a lot of unnecessary effort. Why not research the various homeless charities and donated directly to one of them? Crisis always seem good.

Homelessness should be the first. We could have a vote every year to determine the charity. Not sure how much we would collect, but surely something is better than nothing.

Yeah agree, just needs someone trusted (maybe that's where it all falls down) to hold the funds in an account and then at the end of the year the money gets passed across to wherever is designated.

We would have fun days to raise money. It would be done in the name of TWTD. A lot of these bigger charities pay directors etc. and we wouldn't be doing that. Every penny would go to the charity. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Do we not set up some kind of bank account where the money is paid in direct. We would have some kind of executors to ensure the money goes where it is needed. I am not sure if it could work, but if anybody knows how to set up a charity, then perhaps it is possible.

There are a few steps to follow, you’d need to register with the charity commission and you will need trustees, responsible and accountable for delivery of the charitable purposes (and the finances). You’re right, most charities have paid directors, some can earn pretty well, and indeed thousands of staff. I’ll declare an interest here, having worked in the sector for some time. But your elected politicians won’t fund these services and we all need to pay our bills, eh. You can read about the basics here: https://www.gov.uk/setting-up-charity It’s a lovely idea, btw. If you get it going, I’ll be a regular donor. I think you could raise a lot through a vehicle like this. Feel free to DM me if you want a chat.

May I throw the CAB and Shelter into the hat for the free legal advice they give. There's possibly no where else you find a solicitor and no other fecker is going to fight for you for free.

Was thinking about the CAB t'other day, strangely. Some great people who volunteer their services there. Whenever I've been involved with local groups/charities, the practical advice and help the CAB have provided has been absolutely brilliant for those who need it. Easy to forget it's all through the selfless dedication of others.

They have their paid professionals too, but they earn it. Overwhelmed with demand and underfunded, they are often the only source of advice left. This isn't a political statement as such, but a fact that under this government many places have had their funding removed altogether and the voices that used to stand up for those most in need has been taken away. This has in no doubt added to the homeless issue, but also for those at the raw end of unfair benefit cuts, as the support required is in shorter supply than ever. [Post edited 31 Jan 2020 21:10]

We could run a poll for the charity of the month. You could broaden it out to include charities tackling the injustices and damage the Tories do - plenty of options then.

Absolutely. The reams of forms, endless phone calls etc that people have to navigate to get their needs seen to is absolutely horrendous. The CAB know all of that like the back of their hand and have helped so many people over the (in my view purposeful ) hurdles put before them, it's incredible. Especially if you're someone whose first language isn't English, have learning difficulties or suffer from various MH problems - ie those most at risk. Hats off to them, a much underrated and much needed service these days. Sadly.
