We had a mixed year last year, but this place gave lots of great advice.

Spent the day and a bit of yesterday weeding, boarding around the edge of the garden to make raised beds, and built another one from scratch. Planting out tomorrow what I can, and starting stuff under plastic in the dining room for planting later.

Dunno if it's the fresh air or not, but it's helping pass the time while life lacks so much structure. What are the green fingered pros on here up to this year?

Plenty of gardening going on in Great Bentley, I should imagine.

Living in a flat has advantages at our age, but we do miss the garden.

I'd like to as it's lovely outside, but don't feel well enough to be honest.

I've picked up a rotten cold or similar past few days.

There must be something going around

I'm gonna pop out now and take an inch and a half off the back lawn, nothing too taxing, really nice here in Posh land, too good to be inside really..

Some builders left a toilet here they'd ripped out so turned it into a pot for the expanding herb garden yesterday. Not exactly gardening but think it looks quite nice :)

We could start a TWTD gardening site feck all else to do. Thinking of digging part of our lawn to start veggy patch could help if food gets short

Busman,s holiday for me.

Now about to tend my borders, cut the grass and sort out the garden furniture.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

When were you last in contact with other people?

I ws thinking yesterday that since we know the incubation period of an "ordinary" cold is 1-3 days, and the incubation period for Covid_19 is 7-14 days, that might help people who can't get a test work out whether they've got Covid_19 or something else?

Planted my early spud today, having had them chitting for the last month or so.

Planted some carrots and parsnips yesterday. Onion and shallot sets a couple of weeks back.

Also got peppers, chillis, aubergines and tomatoes growing on my windowsills.

All systems go from this point though!

I started to feel it coming on following the Tesco excursion during the week.

Grubby other people using my trolly prior to me I suppose. Those places are full of it let's be honest.

Scratchy throat the next day etc. Pretty sure it's a regular cold.

Not going anywhere until I think it's ok regardless as, virus or not, it's still unfair to give other people a rotten cold!

Last backend decided to scale back the veg growing this season, but that was then ...

We're later than most up in the Yorks Dales, but gonna try & get off to a flyer with starting seeds indoors. Last week ordered loadsa compost & frost protection for when it comes to planting out. Seeing what leftover seeds I have that might still be in date is next; then online ordering for the rest is next!

I'll stick some runners in, French beans, mange tout and courgettes when I can be bothered.

Bit early for those yet.

Most fundamental mistake newbies make is putting things in too early. Wait till the soil warms up (buy a soil thermometer if necessary & follow the guidelines).

Making a few mistakes is part of the fun.

Don't worry too much - other than as Ryorry says about putting stuff in too soon, uncovered etc. That way you'll lose the lot and have to start over. Very frustrating.

Putting up structures for beans btw, don't under estimate the wind's ability to smash the lot to bits so do make sure they're in a good spot with plenty of light but also some decent shelter.

Sorry if too obvious.

I went a bit overboard with the seed pots it seems. Got 3 bags and then the books and diagrams say one spud does plenty if you give it room! Had them chitting all week and planted a handful in the bags I have. Going to extend the beds and make a dedicated potato patch when I can this week.

Found some raspberries had sprouted amongst the weeds so saved them and am planting them and strawberries out in one patch.

Peas going in tomorrow evening. Onions and garlic in the new raised bed I made.

Planted peppers, toms, sage and basil Friday night and they are under propagators in my dining room so hopefully they work. Carrots, parsnips, beets and caulis all going in when I can get the time.

Seems although we are meant to work 8-3am officially now I'm getting emails and calls 24/7 still so it's hard to set time aside without being made to feel like I should be sat marking and making for the time being.

Made use of the sunshine by attacking my patios and paths with 'patio cleaner' which appears to be a chlorine bleach.

I'm fairly sure my hands are now virus free - and after inhaling bleach for the last few hours my respiratory tract ought to be too.

Parsnips are notoriously difficult/slow to germinate so the ground may still be on the cold side. Some people put a row of radish in at the same time to get a quick extra crop in the same space.

Why would anyone grow something just to throw it away? Or is it a cat deterrent?

It's a cat deterrent isn't it.
