Lockdown it is then. (n/t) 20:33 - Mar 23 with 2701 viewshomer_123

As I've been saying since last week.

This was always the end game.

It had to come. This still does not seem real. But we really are going to take a catastrophic battering in term of loss of life. The NHS will be overwhelmed and will not cope. It's inevitable even with these new measures in place.

It's about time it should have been done a couple of weeks ago.

It's been the Govs approach to eek this out as long as possible.

It has always been where we would end.

The timing could still be right.

We're on the Italy trajectory. I'd say the timing could definitely have been sooner. Eeking it out has been pointless and a waste of time.

I don’t think they could have initiated it much sooner; if the numbers were lower when this occurred people wouldn’t have taken it seriously and police will only be able to disperse so many crowds. People’s actions have played a part in this.

To counter my previous post, I think the point is we needed to try and take ourselves off the Italy trajectory into a reduction of numbers. As it is we’re simply following the same path.

Intriguingly we’re the first country to put a time limit on this - three weeks then review. I can’t recall any review dates from elsewhere?

Yep, people will work for as long as they can and try to adhere the 2m rules etc - even though will likely travel to work together

The issue that is to be considered is, did what Italy do prior to the lockdown work?
It didn’t, the growth was still too much.

In the papers that experts were using, as posted by GB, one thing was clear, past a certain point, trace and isolate based on known cases, will not work. The first phase of trying to stop the spread is basically over.

One of those points is a death, without large number of known positive cases. At that point the progress cannot be slowed without proper intervention.

I think today Johnson finally did a competent address. But it could have been done earlier.

Whether the public would have accepted it two weeks ago is another matter.

You're very angsty today. I'm not being obtuse. We're following their trajectory and have done nothing to avoid following it.

The public weren’t accepted it at the weekend. Though I wonder how much of that was knowing what was coming so attending something ‘normal’ whilst they could - a bit like the queues at McDonalds today!

Yep, those images maybe what helps make this lockdown more acceptable.

But, it may have been better to try earlier.

When you say experts in the papers, are you saying the health experts including the NHS advising Boris aren't experts ?

Poland and Czech Rep put 2 weeks on theirs a week ago.

Well, in the evening, during the day millions of us must trundle off to work, but don't worry the four hours in the evening will make all the difference..

No. I am referring to the scientific advice that was supplied to the Government. Some of their advice has been published. GB posted a link.

It is what I referenced in another thread when critiquing Johnson’s previous attempts at communicating with the public. E.g. the advice was to prioritise clear and transparent reasons for actions rather than reassuring the public. In Johnson’s previous announcements, he wasn’t clear and tried to blister his way through the important messages.

Similarly, the early talk about “herd immunity”, that now seems to have been dropped may well be seen as a mistake.

From the advice given to the government

“It is a political decision to consider whether it is preferable to enact stricter measures at first, lifting them gradually as required, or to start with fewer measures and add further measures if required.”

Italy are now on the decline. The maths say everyday will now be a decline for them. If we end up with similar figures to Italy that will be a success. I fear we will not though.

At the time of the national lockdown in Italy the stats were:
Persons tested - 53826
Positive cases - 9172
Deaths - 463

Our record reads at:
Persons tested - 83945
Positive cases - 5605
Deaths - 335

Our figures are lower than Italy's at the point each country has locked down; the hope is that will continue.
