If it's Serco doing it, you're probably safe from Big Brother if their record at well.....everything is anything to go by.

Don’t understand how the tracing can work anyway.... according to the 10 o’clock news, if you report symptoms, it will alert people you have been near.

Showing symptoms could mean anything and not necessarily that you have COVID-19. Surely the trace needs to alert people you have been near if you have a positive test?

The whole thing reeks of the government not wanting / being able to suffer the economic pain any more.

A mate of mine worked out his wife (from the Uk) was tracking his night time movements in Lagos via the iphone app thing.

If he wanted to stay out late, or go to a bar his wife wouldn't approve of, he'd get his driver to drop his phone off home first.

Still happily married as far as I know.

GCHQ have run the rule over the app to ensure it is fit for purpose.

Purely coincidentally they will have worked out how to hack it.

My better half keeps asking me to turn on tracking on my iPhone. I've nothing* to hide, but the thought of her,or anyone, knowing exactly where I am 24/7 gives me the heebeegeebees. I keep feigning ignorance that I don't know what she's talking about lol.

I have a close relation who got involved in a spectacular meltdown by his wife when she kept a note of his alcohol consumption and his movements by that tracking app (the alcohol consumption was a visual thing, the tracking app doesn't do that...yet).

Not only can you be tested, but your contacts as well. Allowing a more targeted testing offensive, rather than trying to randomly test as many people as possible. Very important, given limited resources and facilities. Also enables entire new branches of the outbreak to be potentially nipped in the bud before they can develop further.

There is a write up about how the application works that has been published by GCHQ. It's fairly technical but if people are interested I can try and do a summary:
https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/blog-post/security-behind-nhs-contact-tracing-app

This has only been out for half a day, having been published late last night. Going to take a while for the security researchers to attempt to pick holes in it, and then that will come even further when the application is in the wild. The first thing techies are going to do is see if they were lying or not, which should not be difficult to do.

That's part of the point. By targeted testing, they can use the quantities they have more efficiently, by only doing those who have symptoms and the people they have been in recent direct contact with (which ought, currently, to be fairly limited for most).

Hope the tracking app differentiates between walking past someone and driving by in a car.

Only logs 10 to 15 minutes of contact I believe.

The conspiracy theorists will love talking about this tracking app. You can be certain that many people will believe that was the whole point of the Covid-19 crisis, for the government to be able to legally track where everyone is.

I'll download it though, If Google are allowed to know everything I do then why not my government.

Yes, have just read the paper linked by Dan. Assumed they wouldn't really be daft enough not to have thought of things like that. Especially if NCSC/GCHQ is involved, rather than just commecial contractors working for the NHS.

Also the Government can't respond to emails or buy aprons. The thought that they could somehow control the UK through advanced smart phone manipulation is laughable.

I think if I heard correctly you have to be in contact with someone for 15 minutes

Indeed. Always quite interesting to get the annual Google Location report and to reminisce all the places i've been in the last year . To be far I've got no problem with this as myself, wife and two kids share our locations to each other permanently.

Then read The Registers take https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/05/05/uk_coronavirus_app/

Summary,it isnt going to work at all,it relies on the app being foreground & running all the time to broadcast & capture the bluetooth ids of other people using the app at the same time to generate the contact data of who to inform if you press the covid symptoms button,

and well iPhone & latest Android OS specifically dont allow apps to work like that anymore, apps get put to sleep, moved to background to save battery if they arent in use and then arent allowed by the OS to broadcast via bluetooth in that setting

Have they convincingly explained why they're using a centralised government held database?

Surely it will just mean that because of legitimate security concerns, not enough people will be convinced to download it - I can't imagine I'll want anything to do with it from what I've heard so far.
