In which case I have cheated a bit. Regardless of the decade that allows me to include them I have pictured all my selections when at their best (if the two do not coincide).
I found the "1" selection really difficult particularly as the first two names I put to paper were Mills and Beattie. Whoever you include from that decade you have to leave out so many good players (and yes I understand that's partly the point) but I wonder if we get drawn to those players who span decades to help with that compromise.
Now I really liked Micky Stockwell, for example, and enjoyed watching him play, and for this sort of thing it helps that he spans 3 decades and could play anywhere, but despite putting him on a short list I just can't put him ahead of a range of options in any of those decades.
Don't mean to single Micky out, other players span 3 of the defined decades and would be likely candidates for inclusion - Wright, Dozzell, Yallop, John Wark (though surely he should be high up on anyone's teamsheet). There are many, many more who span two of the time periods of course. | |
