Started thinking about testimonials attended and then randomly made a list of ones that I went to. Any others that people remember/went to? I've got a feeling I may well have forgotten one, or maybe two as well.

Alan Hunter v Celtic
George Burley v Aberdeen
Ron Gray v England XI
Paul Cooper v Norwich
West Ham (for Phil Parkes) at Upton Park
Frank Yallop v West Ham
John Wark v Arsenal (I always wondered why we didn't get Liverpool down for that)
Simon Milton v (was it Blackburn?)

Milton was v West Ham. I also remember them for Fab v Colchester, Richard Naylor, Laurie Sivell, Colin Harper, Mick Lambert and Bobby Robson v England. Oh, and Beat, of course, his was against Dynamo Moscow.

Trevor Whymark v Naridge, 1979.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Sivell's may be one that I forgot about actually, who was it against?

Was there a game between current team v FA Cup winners. That rings a bit of a bell in my withered memory.

Edit. Maybe that was the Ron Gray game as I see you've said England XI was for Bobby.

I remember (long time ago) when they used to go round the pitch with huge blankets or sheets and people used to hurl coins in to them so if you were on the wall at the front there was a good chance of getting an old threepenny bit around your ear hole.

Looking in TMWMTT there was a joint Jimmy Leadbetter/John Elsworthy game against Arsenal on 29th March 1966 which I was probably at.

Ray Crawford v Wolves 29th April 1969 which I was at.

Colin Harper v Don Revie XI 2nd May 1975-I was probably there.

Mick Mills v Twente Enschede 26th April 1976(44 years ago today!)

Colin Viljoen v Naarwich 9th May 1977 check

Mick Lambert v Allstars XI Two days after F.A. Cup win check

Trevor Whymark v Naarwich 5th Feb 1979 yep

I was at work so did not see Allan Hunter v Celtic 3.11.81.

I think I was at The Beat v Moscow Dynamo 10.3.82.

George Burley v Aberdeen 15.8.83. Not sure if I was there or not.

Eric Gates v EnglandU21 27.11.84. Think so.

Laurie Sivell v 1978 Cup Winners 20.5.85 yes

Didn't Mich D'Avray have one too? Seem to remember going to it.

See, there's another one that I reckon I went to as by the time Mich earned a testimonial, I was going home and away every week. Can't remember it or indeed who it was against though.

Yep, was against the 1981 squad plus guests (eg Clive Woods).

Was 1st August 1989.

Why against Dynamo Moscow? Seems a tad random.

Also Dale Roberts vs Newcastle (SBR didn’t like the stick Craig Bellamy was getting).

Also Frank Yallop in August 1992.... vs West Ham. The North Stand wasn’t open as they hadn’t quite finished fitting the seats in it.

Interesting that Celtic was the opposition for Allan Hunter testimonial. I thought he was a northern irish Protestant who scolded Butcher off for signalling a catholic cross when he ran into the pitch

I also just read online that the game was paused for a while because celtic fans wee’d on the bottom of the floodlights and a celtic flute band serenaded the crowd until play could resume again

15k there at night and 6k were from Celtic

It was some day that. Celtic were everywhere - they packed every pub - except The Falcon from memory as I'm pretty sure that's where I was.

Aberdeen came down the following year in the UEFA Cup and they most definitely were in The Falcon.

No one has mentioned SBR testimonial yet - unless I missed it.

There was definitely a testimonial game the day we got relegated from the First Division as I was at PR the day Oxford beat Arsenal 3-0. Maybe that was SBR's. Doesn't seem to be anywhere online with this info.

1986? That's the first I know of any testimonial. Could it have been someone like Laurie Sivell following his retirement from injury? I certainly am not aware of any others. There was early in that season for Coops, but that's it.

I was going to add D'Avray and Stockwell. I think they are the only 2 I got to see.

It was the only time I ever saw Clive Woods play. He showed enough in that to make me think he must have been a wonderful player to watch in his prime. His skill and balance. OK, the tackles weren't flying in and he was clearly past it in terms of fitness but he looked sublime.

I seem to remember watching Wark play in something when he was 50+ which would make it only a little over a decade ago. Was it one for Matt Holland or something?

I remember walking past the Cornhill and beer being chucked everywhere, then along St Matthews St a young Celtic lad completely off his face was pushed over a wall and kicked about, pretty sickening, the guy couldn't stand up let alone defend himself.

I also remember Hunter chucking his shirt to the Celtic fans at the end of the match. Seemed a bit weird.

I have no recollection of the other testimonials, I must have gone to several of them but I have problems remembering anything of matches from the 70s / 80s.

There are a few here (possibly all mentioned already.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Ipswich-Town-Home-Teams-Testimonial-Football-Programmes

I reckon I got to Yallop's and Milton's as well as the two I mention above but can't recall them quite so well.

I also have a feeling I have a copy of the Robson programme. Interesting to see its value but (assuming I have got a copy) I wouldn't part with it. Need to go through them some time.
