Given that during the 2005 Ashes series, a certain J.Anderson was not in the side and not the force he is/was, who of that pace attack would make way for him had he have been?
I had this thought pop into my head literally this morning and still can't decide.

Hoggard, without any doubt.
Agreed. Probably the most similar to Jimmy but not as good, although to be fair to Hoggard he was very effective back then. Flintoff and Harmison had more pace and bounce, Jones could swing it both ways at 90mph.

imagine if you had a peak Swann in that bowling attack.
Anderson, Harmison, Flintoff, Jones and Swann

Jones didn't even play the last test. I think they played Collingwood and bowled Hoggard, Harmison, Flintoff and Giles
Collingwood was a playing it safe selection as we were 2-1 up with just the Oval to go. He only scored 17 runs in the.match but took up a lot of deliveries. He may have bowled half a dozen overs of medium pace too. The Aussies ribbed him for years over his MBE as a result.

Forgot he was a bowler too. I suppose they had Vaughan at a push as well.

It would be Hoggard. He did a good for England with his swing bowling, he could contain and to his credit he was quicker than most thought. He was one of those bowlers that the skipper could always depend on, but Anderson would most certainly be an upgrade. Our attack in 2005 had just about everything, apart from a world class spinner. I would've liked to have Swann in there instead of Giles if we could change history. Although, if that was the case, then I'm sure the Aussies would've liked to have seen Lillee and Thompson in their side in place of Kasprowicz and Gillespie.
Definitely Hoggy, although he would run through brick walls away from home and very skilful when conditions suited. Adding to this, whats the best England XI you guys can put out from the times you've been watching? The first test I can remember was when Taylor and Marsh batted all day back in the late 80s. Gooch Cook Root KP Stokes Stewart (wk) Flintoff Swann Jones S Gough Anderson Hard on Broad & peak Harmy, Gower & Botham bit past it. Maybe a bat light.

Oh Lord. That was during the 89 Ashes, which began a decade and a half of Aussie dominace.
My team as per request, which would probably be different on another day.
Gooch Cook Smith Gower Pietersen Botham Flintoff Knott (purely gone for wk ability here) Swann Anderson Willis
Could probably name another three teams. Trescothick was someone who I wanted to find room for but couldn't. It was a close call between Knott and Russell.
I originally had Root in there but favoured Robin Smith as I wanted some steel.
Underwood may have got in ahead of Swann but he only played tests in the sub continent in my time which wouldn't have been on TV.

Not sure we had much beyond Hoggard either. Maybe Plunkett or Tremlet
Tremlett bowled some great stuff in the Ashes series win of 2010/11. His height and bounce really troubled their batsmen, just a pity he suffered with injuries and retired early. He was never the same after that series. He's an absolute beast now, a real gym bunny......

I think Steve Waugh scored something like 400 runs before being dismissed in the series too. We had tail enders like Geoff Lawson smashing 50s off us as well. Gooch was lbw to Alderman pretty much every innings. It was a bleak time. The summer before wasn't much better, we had a 5-0 defeat against the Windies and got through four captains in the process.

Hoggard, without any doubt.
Anderson didn’t have anything like the skill set at the time, was struggling with his action, whereas Hoggard was an integral part of the attack who putting aside his skill and determination for a moment, played a role in managing an end that none of the other quicks could, albeit flintoff later did. And the Aussies didn’t rate him which was helpful.
He held up pretty well in the averages too. (Don’t scroll down to the batting, regardless of THAT four)
Jimmy had a bit of time in the wilderness, so called coaches ***king around with his bowling action early on. If Jimmy had been in there since 2005 to today he'd probably have a thousand test wickets by now.

I wouldn’t have replaced any of that attack at the time that summer, and I wouldn’t in retrospect either.
The point in the original post is what if Anderson was as good as he has been since 2005. I think everyone so far acknowledges the four we had in that line up was the best available at the time.
