To be honest, I think we’ve been just as big a basket case as the States in real terms over the past 4 or 5 years.

Trump and many of his supporters are louder and more clownish but our politics and resulting government looks shot to sh1t.

They won’t be as bad and maybe the tone of the debate can lead to better politics. But I’m not at all convinced that Biden and Starmer are that interested in addressing the underlying structural problems that Trump and Johnson, in their turn, have been happy to exploit.

You’d think. But when the opposition itself is that far to the right and doesn’t offer any prospect of real change or any real vision then it cements the overall direction of travel.

Hopefully, the relative narrowness of the Biden win against an awful president and against the backdrop of a country struggling with inequality and imbalance should sharpen the mind and the purpose a little. But if Biden listens to his backers and the Democratic establishment then I can see the same mistakes being made that led us here.

All of the above applies to Starmer too.
