Had no idea he now plays for one of the top teams in Poland. Saw him score in a highlights reel of the Polish championship against Legia Warsaw.

I didn’t see enough of Malarcyk to have much of an idea about his potential.

But it raises an interesting point as it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see players perform better elsewhere. We’ve been a difficult club to come into and look good — as a player but also as a manager (although that quickly becomes their own responsibility).

Exceptions are loanees like Gio and Fraser who instantly raise the level of the team. Or of our own players, McGoldrick and Murphy are top of the list in recent times but there aren’t many other players I can think of that set the tone as consistently.

As for managers, it seems that very few can come in and turn things around and we need to be a lot more careful about who we task with that. It’s basically only Mick that’s really bucked that trend in the past 20 years although Royle and Magic deserve joint credit for managing a sharp decline with savage budget constraints and bringing a decent Championship team out the other side.

MM was a funny one that he could sign a player and quickly decide they weren't for him

Polish Pete much like Danny Rowe seemed to tick that box, Rowe actually cost us some reasonable money yet MM cast him off very quickly.

As others have said, we didn't see enough of him to make a judgement either way

I believe he actually came to Town with some pedigree but never really settled in

Yeah, although MM was mostly taking cheap punts and getting squad cover as much as anything else. I imagine that means the odds were always against them establishing themselves in the first team even if Mick thought he saw something.

I have no problem with that as that’s where we were financially. And with the Academy production line largely shut down under Jewell we didn’t have many of our own squad fillers and players to develop.

Clearly, being a football manager is not easy at all. I think it was Mick himself who said the secret of successful management is to make more good decisions than bad ones, which is I think one of the best descriptions I’ve heard. Not least because you have to allow for bad decisions (or even just decisions that don’t work out).

I imagine you make more good decisions than bad if you stick to an overall approach or focus. If like Lambert it seems you take decisions randomly like choosing lottery numbers then all decisions become equal. And the chances of having a decent net result of good decisions (and ones that feed into other decisions) is minimal. It’ll just look a muddle and the slide continues.

Malarczyk was on the verge of breaking into the Poland squad when he joined us so his spell here knocked his career back a fair bit.

This is the first time I can ever remember completely forgetting about a player. Which is worrying...

"...so his spell here knocked his career back a fair bit."

You could say that about pretty much everyone who's been through the doors of PR in recent years.

Probably not unfair

All I can say about Polish Pete was he was a big lad and on the rare games he started, it looked like he'd take a little time to blend in, maybe there was a language barrier?

MM clearly didn't like something there but there you go, not every move works out for a player. He clearly had some talent but Ipswich was the wrong move for him.

He had an excellent left foot cross from deep - the sort that was being raved about on MOTD on Saturday. We never gave him a chance; likewise Josh Emmanuel and several others. Ten game runs in a side to really judge a player - not stop start in out muck it all about.

Don't remember seeing him on the left-wing. Are you getting him confused with Amir Karic?

Put in a couple of good crosses on the highlights also (unusual for a centre-back). Could certainly do with him right now. Great header for the goal.

Didn’t he get a red card in his last appearance?
