Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? 20:08 - Jan 5 with 5496 views | nodge_blue | I remember that Bobby Ferguson thought that our defence should be good enough in that league to just play 3 at the back. But rather than it being 3 centre halves playing close together like we see today, it was more like one centre half with two full backs playing quite wide. I think it was Irvin gernon I saw trying to play there and it was woeful. It was dropped after awhile but was really odd. That's what I think I remember anyway. I'm not imagining that am I?

By the look of the line up that started the first two games it was Zondervan at RB, Atkins and Cranson in the middle and McCall at LB.
Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 20:39 - Jan 5 with 2542 views | gainsboroughblue | You've got me wondering now. We didn't sign anyone significant (if at all) during the summer so certainly didn't replace Butcher. I'd have said Yallop would have been on the right with Cranson in the middle maybe with Atkins? With Gernon as you say on the left. Now I've written this, I remember us getting in John Deehan in a swap for Putney. Edit. I see PJH has contributed and I would take his memory over mine 99 times out of a hundred. Forgot about McCall to be honest and had him down as midfield in the main. [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 20:41]

My post was not from memory, it was from 'Ipswich Town The Modern Era'. Frank Yallop did not play until the 4th game of the season, looks like Romeo Zondervan started the season at RB. You are right about the Deehan/Putney swap.

I really think we had a mid week game early season with gernon playing in this back 3. I stood in the churchman's. And just remember us struggling. Which probably also explains why he didn't play after that.

Wouldn't be a 0-1 defeat v Oldham by any chance? That really was a miserable game, miserable result and a dawning that getting out of that division wasn't going to be easy.

It could well have been. I think we really did think we were going to stroll that league. And I still think I remember Ferguson justifying playing 3 at the back as a result.

His first game had Zondervan, Atkins and McCall and nobody else that could have logically played at the back, it was midweek and we lost at home to Oldham so that is likely the game you remember. But if Zondervan was RB it was a flat back four I suppose. The rest of the starting team was Cooper, Dozzell, Gleghorn, Brennan, Cole, Deehan and Wilson | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He was more circa 83/84. I saw him play in a few football combination games at PR. He hit the scoreboard with a wayward shot and the scoreboard flashed 'Owch'. Funny the things you remember. Dont think he even made the bench for the first team.

I think you're right. Ron Futcher scored for Oldham. Unless he was the man sent off instead. I definitely remember him for something that night. Edit. PJH gets there first again! [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 21:22]

The match report for that game on the pride of anglia site captions Zondervan as "the Ipswich defender". I don't remember any three at the back formations but that's not to say it didn't happen. I do remember the opener against Grimsby being a completely surreal experience as someone brought up on years of First Division football.

My memory went years ago but I thought Gernon only played those few games because of an injury to another player, although his performances weren't great.

Thanks. I felt a bit sorry for him as it wasn't the best time to come into the team, but then that was it. Although not the first or last player to be given a few starts and then disappear

Wasn’t that 1-1 with their keeper having a brilliant game? [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 22:18]

Think it was 1-1 yes. Other memories for me: 3-1 down away at West Brom and scoring 3 in the last 10 mins to win it. Winning 3-0 home v Plymouth just before Christmas. Missing a penalty home v Derby and then losing 2-0, thinking we still had a chance of automatic promotion if we won that one. Losing the play off v Charlton, an occurrence which would sadly be repeated over the years...
Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 22:25 - Jan 5 with 2193 views | rgp1 | From what I remember we were in touch with the leaders for most of that season and snuck into 5th place which in them days was the last play off slot. I think we had almost double the supporters Charlton had for the ridiculously early Sunday play off semi at Selhurst park for the usual town 'flop at important stage' game. Probably worth remembering that our front two of jockey Wilson and deehan got almost 40 goals between them that season!

We had a bit of a dose of the 'can't beat the top teams' disease that we have currently. Very few points taken from the teams above us that season. Derby, Pompey, Leeds, Oldham. We beat Leeds I think at home but that was pretty much it, being beaten at home by all the rest. No surprise we went out to the First Division side in the play-offs.
