Lankester forward option ? 15:31 - Jan 29 with 1055 viewsstiff_talking

Given striker and club crisis is Lankester a better forward option ?
Had a brief cameo under Hurst on free kicks and playing centrally and performed well I recall.

I think he is a forward personally. I can see him as an out and out number 9 more so than a 10 or a winger to be honest. But I think he would need to partner someone, playing off Hawkins or Norwood perhaps when fit. Not sure we have any forwards, fit or otherwise who suit the lone striker role really.

The trouble is, the way we're currently playing the centre forward is very isolated and Lanks was really struggling to get in the game the last time we picked him. Combine those things and I think we'd be watching him barely touch the ball for 60 mintues before getting hooked for someone a bit brawnier.

We need a proper centre forward - someone with nous, can buy fouls, bully the back line, is an outlet. Without Norwood or Hawkins we have no presence at all. Hawkins may be limited but he's that focal point.

I don't think there's a single centre forward, certainly not one we could realistically get, that would thrive with our system and playing style.

But surely we must have, as we have played with a lone striker for a while now? How can this be?

Can’t be any worse than what we have already.

I agree to a point - but there is an element of if the forward can't hold the ball you are also going to struggle to bring others into play. It's no co-incidence we look better with Norwood playing.

He reminds me a bit of Scowcroft. Good footballer, but not prolific enough and will need a David Johnson-esque player alongside.

He's played No10 and No9 in as a scholar.

Yes I had often wondered this myself & also wondered if Edwards could possibly be used up there as well? Edwards can score goals, can shoot, take people on with his pace. Might be a goodnoption? Just a thought. At the moment if we saw a teamsheet with those two up front it would certainly grab my attention. Back to the horrid one up front tomorrow!

We need someone who can play with his back to goal, for all that people criticised Hawkins, he at least showed some ability to do that and bring others into play. Norwood or Jackson in that role have a go but it isn’t their natural game, particularly when the ball is in the air. Lankester would, I fear, struggle in the lone forward role and I would fear the effect on his confidence

Toto for the target man role if nobody else available? Hell of a finish for the No Goal.

What we need is to stop playing in a way that requires the centre forward to routinely play with their back to goal, surrounded by defenders, with little to no support.

He is an option, but our forwards, sorry forward, always look isolated and bereft of any service. You could play Harry Kane there and it wouldn;t make any difference.

Imagine if Toto WON a penalty whilst playing centre forward.
