Some really promising ideas here, especially the development of vaccines which not only target the spike protein but the N protein of C19 in order to give a much fuller protection from various variants which seem to be centred around the spike protein.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/feb/21/scientists-say-clinical-trials-f

Also reiterates that the data from the initial rounds of vaccines is better than was hoped for and that the vaccines seem to be blocking transmission at some level even though that wasn't what they were primarily designed for.

Pro tip: don't make plans for the following 24 hours. Side effects generally aren't any worse than a nasty viral thingy, but they can be pretty unpleasant - regular paracetamol, lots of fluids and an early night post jab and you should be grand.

My misses had hers Saturday morning and was fine for the rest of the day, but felt a bit below par yesterday. My mate had his Friday - no side effects at all bar a sore arm. It seems to vary person to person and on my trusted, comprehensive study of 6 people, 3 Pfizer 3 AZ, you get less side effects from Pfizer. Regardless, it’s a very small price to pay for what it potentially does.

As for the next gen stuff, that’s really interesting stuff and gives real hope. One of the interesting elements for me is affordability. For many countries the cost of Vaccine other than the AZ one, currently delivered at cost, is astronomic. While countries and WHO will politically donate vaccine now, that isn’t sustainable and without vaccine across the world there is no chance of controlling this.

It will be interesting to see whether manufacturers reduce the price through competition or politicians collectively force it down going forwards or richer countries just pay for it.

This seems a good point to post this article about vaccine efficacy

https://www.livescience.com/covid-19-vaccine-efficacy-explained.html?utm_source=

Key take aways from that being, the pfizer and moderna jabs have 95% efficacy, which doesn't means 5% of people will still get covid it means 95% fewer people will get it than unvaccinated people.

Comparing efficacy between jabs isn't that straightforward because they all have slightly different definitions of what constituted a case of covid during testing, and also the testing was against different populations at different times. The J&J jab, for instance, was tested when the UK variant was more prevalent, so might account for it's lower efficacy.

A few weeks after the first dose of all the vaccines mentioned, no-one got serious covid.

That last line is important:

"A few weeks after the first dose of all the vaccines mentioned, no-one got serious covid."

Especially with regard to the AZ one, it still reduced serious cases of the South African variant, there just wasn't evidence of the efficacy against lower-level infections.

I had AZ out of the blue last night as a local pharmacy/vaccine hub had some going to waste at the end of the day.

No real side effects for me thus far - arm was a bit numb last night (like from a dead arm punch), but slept ok and was able to go for a cycle ride first thing this morning. I'm 30 with no underlying conditions for reference.

I had the Pfizer vaccination last Thursday lunchtime but have not really had any significant side effects. Bit of a 'lumpy' sensation in my right arm where the jab was, but I guess that was just the Microsoft chip bedding in...

I felt lower than usual Saturday night / Sunday morning but that might have been down to something else. Seeing the highlights of Ross County beating Celtic last night seems to have perked me up.

I hadn't spotted that bit of potential good news. Losing to the bottom team is not acceptable for a club like Celtic. The sooner they get rid of Lennon and bring in a club legend with experience of playing at the top level, the very top, with big clubs, really big clubs, the better.

I don't feel quite so bad about having mine yesterday now!

Have a (minor) hospital appointment this week so must have got invited to book it on the back of that. I feel a bit guilty but UCLH was quiet yesterday afternoon.

Had the Pfizer one, arm is sore today and I crashed out for an hour when I got home but not convinced the latter was down to the vaccine!

That's excellent.

How did they know to contact you? Seems to be a few people under 50 with no conditions getting jabs now. Certainly good that any excess or no shows are getting used up.

My parents had added themselves to the waiting list for that reason (basically a local reserve list for people who could get there in <five minutes), but my dad got an appointment via official channels yesterday so when they let my mum know that they had two spare yesterday she asked if I could take one instead and it wasn't a problem. So my mum gave me the call, and I went from watching Arsenal v Man City to vaccinated in about two minutes flat!

The people running it seemed to say it was almost a daily occurrence though, so worth a try if people are keen to get it done ASAP (I wasn't particularly but glad to have had it done now, follow up jab booked for 10th May).
