The fine should obviously be waved but there is a very good reason why public gatherings are currently banned. We can't turn a blind eye to public gatherings just because we support their cause.

Why would this person not be fined? Nobody has the right to ignore the law.

You were the one, again, with the all-embracing statement to allow me to take this tangent with no hint of whataboutery at all.

I am simply agreeing with your statement that "nobody is allowed to ignore the law" but pointing out a few recent examples of where the law has been ignored with, to date, nobody brought to book.

Without doubt the government has acted without honour in offering only an 1% rise to health workers. Absolutely appalling, and the idiots in the cabinet, as well as anyone defending such treatment should hang their heads in shame.

But, this does not give nurses (or anyone) the right or excuse to organise or attend a rally during a pandemic. Support us on the demostation and we’ll meet again on the COVID ward next week.

You are quite right Matt.

We have criminalised NHS workers who organised a 40 strong demo of social distanced, mask wearing placard holding workers standing around in the open air which according to all current advice will be of negligible risk to anyone.

As I said, seriously?

"We sought to engage with and peaceably disperse those attending this afternoon's protest, explaining that the gathering was in contravention of government lockdown rules," she added.
"Unfortunately officers were met with a degree of non-compliance and it was therefore necessary to enforce issue fixed penalty notices."
Looks like the police gave them an opportunity to just get on their way and say no more about it ... it would seem this opportunity was not taken ...

And in addition, we have moved from a legal system where the police collect evidence, the CPS apply a public interest consideration before deciding whether a prosecution should go ahead and finally a jury decides on guilt, to one where a policeman does all three.

Hence why we get a 65 year NHS worker arrested and fined for actions that literally hurt no body, on the say so of one policeman.

So will say again, seriously? We think this is an appropriate way to treat people for holding up placards in as covid secure manner as it is possible to get?

Regardless of sympathies they broke the law in a pandemic. If they were demonstrating for a cause you didn’t believe in would you be so sympathetic?

Age is irrelevant and their job is irrelevant.

People need to stick to the rules and the rules are public gatherings are banned.

I will also say that health care workers should really know better. They’ve seen first hand what COVID can do. And no, I’m not demonising nurses, they deserve much much more than one per cent.
