Through my work connections I've been made aware that the new immigration salary threshold is causing a major issue in the haulage/HGV sector - put simply the significant supply of EU drivers that filled a lot of these roles has dried up, as they don't meet the salary threshold.

For balance, the rise in home deliveries over the last few years has also sucked drivers away too, so brexit isn't the only issue.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Can't be much difference between driving a trawler and a truck.

And the good folk of Hartlepool will be knocking each other over to fill these vacant posts, as will all the other 'red wall' malcontents - those who have not already taken jobs in hospitality, and fruit/veg picking, that is.

"One of the UK’s biggest mobile phone networks has announced roaming charges for Britons travelling to the EU, in a blow to Boris Johnson’s Brexit celebrations.

Customers of O2 have been told they will be billed £3.50 for every gigabyte (GB) of data used above a new limit of 25GB, from August."

and so it goes on, a never ending shtshow of failure and loss for the UK

Oh dear, does this mean dig for victory will return to these shores - such shortages. Good job my broad beans look like producing a bumper harvest. How I will survive though with only 25gb of mobile data I do not know. Now should I blame Covid or Brexit or Johnson or every Tory voter in the land, or just get on with my life (which believe it or not does include helping others)....such decisions.

I've the opportunity to take my HGV licenses, paid for, not something I've ever considered in the past but I have to say it's very tempting now. I get the feeling that I'd never be without work as long as I'm physically able to drive and it appears that driver shortages are beginning to push salaries in an upward direction.

So whats the problem if there is a shortage of man power the rates of pay will rise can't be bad. Cheap East European labour was holding wages down. Thats why the average working voted leave.

Bartrums haulage firm in Eye were on the radio the other week saying if people want to join them they have got their own HGV training centre and will pay for people to train and pass their HGV test. With wages heading towards the 40k a year mark it's a good time to do it.

It was certainly an issue as supply exceeded demand at the lower end of the pay scale (nb. it's worth noting that in mid- to higher-earning jobs EU migration had the opposite effect, actually increasing wages for Brits in those pay brackets and the overall effect of EU membership on pay was positive).

On the other side of the scale some firms now can't get the labour from the UK and are going bust. Rather than chucking the baby out with the bathwater and screwing everyone over, maybe a sensible solution would have been to do more to ensure people at the lower end of the wage scale were actually getting reasonable wages that allowed them to live without worrying about being in in-work-poverty. We had the power to do that through minimum/living wage legislation all along.

Dear Jeera the thread is entitled 'Taking back Control is Great', no mention of Hauliers. I am fully aware that you would rather this site excludes those with differing views to your own, but length of service on TWTD forum is not a prerequisite. To answer your question though of why am I here again; to balance up the agenda and bring some sort of reasoning to the left wing bias of so many of you.
Oh and on the subject of hauliers - they are now being forced to pay a higher wage than previous - the posts will soon be filled.

absolute nonsense

whatever rates of pay are offered you cannot simply conjure up qualified HGV drivers - just as restaurants, hotels, bars etc have found with chefs and farmers with experienced and motivated fruit/veg pickers

and most brexiteers have long voted for the Tories, who have consistently fought against the minimum wage, and the right of workers to collectively bargain for improved wages and conditions

brexiteers - never the brightest

Was the "haulage/HGV sector" not enough of a clue?

You seem to be stirring for the sake of it. There's never been a problem with different views on this site. Phil's very good at policing things and dealing with any abusive behaviour. And it's perfectly reasonable to expect people to justify any comments/claims they make. If people can't explain or justify what they are saying it's got nothing to do with any perceived bias.

Eh?

He means the tens of thousands if HGV drivers, previously not wanting to work because of the low wages, have now been tempted back, thus ending the shortage of said drivers.

In other 'rightie' news the price of fish has dropped dramatically as British fish in British waters have been handing themselves in at places like Grimsby and Padstow, so removing the cost of paying fishermen.
