Maybe he's being signed mainly as cover until Edmundson is up to speed and Nsiala is back? I'm sure I read that Edmundson prefers to play on the left despite being right footed.

We’re paying £500k+ for cover? Don’t like the sound of that. To be honest my big concern is we’re taking a gamble at centre back. An in form Woolfenden and Nsiala playing as he did at Shrewsbury both have better credentials at this level than either Edmundson or Burgess. Now, neither are anywhere near their best at the moment, and this could be a gamble which pays off but I am concerned about it. Over a million pound spent and I have my doubts as to whether we have strengthened at all.

Good job QPR and Swansea didn't listen to many of our knowledgable fans on here or we would have had to pay them to take Dozzell and Downes...

I think most fans on here could see potential in Dozzell and Downes but felt they probably needed to move on for all parties sake.

Sounds to me they don't know much about the player. Also they are fans that have come to accept losing their better players, so there won't be much anger once they get a decent fee.

Amazing isn't it? "bang average L1 CB" already being written off. His signing sounds like exactly what's needed for this division

Yes, maybe I’m being harsh, just doesn’t strike me as someone who is an improvement - or enough of an improvement - on what we’ve already got. Considering the signings of Evans, Burns, Bonne and Pigott I was perhaps hoping for a stand out centre back at this level; someone with experience at the upper end of the division or perhaps even the one above. Whilst I seem to be fishing for down arrows I may as well say that Accrington play in a back three whereas Cook goes with a four - is he accomplished at playing the way we need him to? Particularly as he and Edmundson both seem to prefer playing on the left. I’m sure all this has been looked into but, to me, it feels like there’s a whiff of panic to this signing. Can’t help but wonder how many potential deals have broken down to get to this point. I really hope I’m proven wrong and he’s the next Tony Mowbray/Jason De Vos.

it's not about whether you are being harsh or not, it's about the fact that you are being negative about a player who hasn't even pulled the shirt on yet based upon a couple of feckless posts on another fan forum...

Perhaps I'm just burned by Donacien and Jackson. In all seriousness I'd be fine with his signing if we brought in someone like Wisdom as well. In midfield and attack we've introduced a nice blend (on paper) of experience and youth from higher levels. In defence not so much.

But we don't need 'names' we need players who can do a job and this blokes statistics suggest he is perfectly adequate to do that job in this division.

You’d think that when he’s top of pretty important positional stat categories for the whole division that he’d immediately been seen as better than bang average. Wonder what the defenders who finished in the middle or lower half of those stats are? Bang, bang average?

Donacien was actually the better of our 2 Cbs by quite some way yesterday and whilst he hasn't set the world alight he hasn't put a foot wrong this season...as for Jackson well the less said the better...

The issue is we brought Donacien in to be a Championship standard player.

Burgess is used to playing on the left on a back three. We'll be looking to play him in a back two and, unless Woolfenden quickly refinds his 19/20 form (or Nsiala turns the clock back to 17/18), either him or Edmundson will be on their weaker side. The above is in reference to the comment on not knowing how to get the best from them - nothing more than that.

Why don't we just wait and see, he may be just what we need. We certainly need somebody that wins everything in the air as we will come up against a lot of direct teams like Burton this season and Wolfenden is just too soft for me.

Donacien has done nothing wrong whenever he’s played. And despite all the stick he’s been getting, Wolf was decent yesterday too (aside from one sloppy pass late on). We are League One, expecting us - or any club in this league - to have error-free defenders is wholly unrealistic.

As I said the issue with Donacien is he was signed to be a Championship squad player though I agree, I think he's done well at centre back so far considering the circumstances he's come in to. I've also been someone who's been more defensive (no pun intended) of Woolfenden than most but have to accept that he's not hit the relative heights of 19/20 for a while.

Although if we keep conceding two goals in every game we're going to find it pretty tough to win many games.

We don't concede many chances, think there was only one other of note yesterday - header from distance midway through second half - but we concede from an awful lot of the chances we allow. Better players & organisation should help there. The latter only comes from playing matches as a unit.
