'Time to gel' nonsense 18:24 - Aug 18 with 1211 viewsistanblue

A lot has been said about ''needing time to gel'' - now including by Cook himself. However this is demonstrable nonsense and excuse-making for yet more failure and underachievement. I give you the case of Lincoln who essentially built a whole new team form scratch last season:

Players Out: 21
Players In (inc. loans) : 20

Lincoln won their first 4 games and bar a rocky patch in February/March time were pretty consistent all season. They ended up finishing 5th and were Play-Off runners-up. How do the happy clappers explain this then? Why can little Lincoln fly out the blocks with an entire new team but Ipswich can't? Maybe that's why Gamechanger were wanting Appleton to come here as he has proven he can handle a huge rebuilding job and get results.

This 'needing time to gel' line will now be used for the next month or so as a shield for Cook and the players to hide behind if results don't turn. However, fans that actually know about football will be able to see that this utter bs and an excuse for failure.

Burton have had 13 players leave and 12 join. Admittedly not as big a churn as us, but still a big churn. They have won all 3 games so far.

I wonder if JFH has any spare gel???

Its not demonstrable nonsense. As anyone who has played will tell you.

Over time and experience with a team, you get to know what other lp[ayers are capable of, where they are likely to be, when you can rely on them to win a ball, and when you need to drop and cover. When you should make a run. When to gamble on a pass. What pass is likely to suit the player. etc etc etc

Small margins, but important ones.

Our main failings are in defence and the defenders have been last through the door. Still haven't even seen Edmundson yet.

Obviously any blame can still be levelled at Cook for this, if you wish.

And on another separate note, JFH has been in charge of Burton this time around for 27 games and won 15. Last season, their squad was not as good as ours, however bad we say ours was.

Our main failings are NOT in defence.

Agreed. We have a deep lying midfield 2 that are supposed to help the defence. Also, our new keeper isn’t an upgrade.

So why did little old Lincoln start so well then? They had a much tougher start then us as well including Oxford, Charlton and Blackpool.

funnily enough we had one of the best defensive records in the league last season...

In The first two minutes last night Wolfenden rolls a ball back to Hladky. Hladky has a touch expecting Wolfenden to drop and receive it. He plays it to Wolfenden but Wolfenden had moved up so it went out for a throw. Things like that were happening relatively regularly.

It’s not demonstrable nonsense. Anyone who has played knows you need to time to learn the other players around you as well as how you fit. It’ll come good - it’s just going to take longer.

Why did Lincoln start better? No idea.

Maybe they had the rub of the green that we aren't getting. Missed penalty and missed open goal have probably cost us 6 points. Fine margins.

40+ players who managed 45 mins a game and surrendered to anybody in their faces who gave 100%. Please don’t try and suggest our bloated bunch last year were anything other than laughably poor.

That Burton Albion and Cheltenham this season are better than us is purely down to them actually being teams. We are not. Is JFH a good manager? I actually think he is excellent and I’m amazed he’s not had a chance at a bigger club than QPR, who gave him about 5 mins (4 mins more than the majority of ITFC want to give Cook, ironically).

The season started this month. We have been rubbish because we are rubbish. One lucky point is all we have and it’s one more than we deserve. That’s the reality.

It’s up to Cook and the players now to sort it out and start being competitive.

And Burton are getting the rub of the green - should have been 2-1 down to us on Saturday, could have been 2-0 down to Sunderland last night before they scored with McGeady missing a couple.

Luck

To a degree but I'd say that's more us at the start of the last two seasons than Lincoln in 20/21 - eventually luck tends to run out, which ours did, but Lincoln sustained form and ended up in the play offs.
